Help...Brinkley's pads are bleeding

We just got home from a day trip.  Brinkley played really hard last night and again today in the middle of the day.  I noticed he was licking his pad and when I looked at it, it was red and bloody.  He ate the pad skin right off.  It's the bulb looking pad behind the main pad.  It's so raw... and the one on the other foot is beginning to do the same thing.  We just cleaned it but I don't know what to do.  I know we need to take him to the vet and I'm going to try to get him in asap tomorrow morning but what can i do tonight so it doesn't get worse.  

 

I'm worried.

I would use so antibiotic on it like trimaminic and wrap it. you can put a sock on him and tape the sock snuggly around his leg. (Tape on the sock, not the hair).  At least that will give it time to heal and keep him from licking all night. Not sure what more the vet will do for it but let us know.

Thanks.  We just put socks on him and wrapped it with medical tape (my husband works in the ER).  He's hating life right now.  I hate when he's in pain.

P.S.  I'm so thankful for this site.  My husband wasn't even done cleaning Brinkley's feet when I said, "I'm getting on DK to find out what to do."  I'm grateful for you guys!

I know how you feel. Getting on DK is the first thing I do if something isnt right. Fantastic people here :)

Quincy once got blood filled blisters on his paw pads when we played ball with him on ashphalt, they didn't break and we just didn't let him run for a few days, they healed quickly.

I'm thinking these may be blisters too b/c they seem bigger than normal.  We definitely will be canceling the play date for tomorrow.

I would think in lieu of a systemic antibiotic tonight, that a topical antibiotic ointment wouldn't do any harm until you talk to the Vet. But Caitlin is right, it will need to callous back up to heal.

Caitlin...why no ointment?  And what exactly are Systemic Antibiotics?  I want to build an emergency kit for the future just in case.

Veterinary antibiotics are pretty much the same as human ones, but they have different brand names. Some common ones are Amoxicillin, Cephalexin, and Doxycycline (Vibramycin).

 

My cat was put on every single antibiotic medication possible because of his chronic URI. And I work at Petsmart, so I deal with the antibiotics the animals we treat are prescribed.

Not sure about the no ointment unless the pad does better exposed to air. Systemic antibiotics are oral antibiotics in this case, they also can be IV in other instances, i.e. not topical.

Jack's torn his pads off a couple of times, and I was also told not to use antibiotic ointments. For one thing, everything sticks to the wound, including dirt and the socks. For another, Caitlin is right. They have to be kept clean and dry, and air has to get to them. They need to re-granulate.
