OMG, I 'm freaking out. I tried to cut a mat from under Casey's chin and when she moved I cut her skin. It's pretty bad. I ran over to the vet right away and I have to bring her back in the morning for stitches. Ugh, I'm soooooo mad at myself and feel so bad for Casey!

Ahh, don't feel bad, I cut my Dh and Ds's ears or neck everytime I cut their hair and they still love me and let me do it again and again. At least Casey doesn't swear at you and give you a dirty look like "Hey lady be careful will ya!!"
Ewwww...I am so squimish that I had to stop reading all the postings from other mishaps!  I always pinch the mat with my fingers and cut away the mat outside my finger so I would cut myself and not my Doodle.  I also never go near her anymore when there are any possible distractions.  My DH just walking into to the room can cause Gracie to move.  I always work on her when she is tired and we are alone...just to play save!
Thank you everyone for the comforting words and advice. We're off to the vet now . We'll see how many stitches poor Casey will be coming home with. :(
Poor Casey....hopefully, everything went okay at the Vet.  Do you groom her yourself or do you use a groomer?  I used to cut mats out myself, but my groomer told me that in the future I should just bring them in and she would do it for me....no appointment necessary and free of charge.  She told me it's very common for people who do it themselves to cut (or nick) the dog unless they really have experience with grooming.  Usually when my guys have an active day at Daycare they come home with a few mats, and I run them over the the groomer so she can comb/cut them out.  I don't know if that's an option with your groomer, but it certainly has been helpful for me.
This is my biggest fear...especially around his ears and under his armpits!! It sounds like it happens to the best of the groomers here on DK. Hopefully we will get some pointers from the experts on here and I'm sure Casey will love his Mama no matter what.

Sorry to hear,Accidents do happen.  She will forgive you.

I always have put a comb between the dogs skin -in behind the mat...Then I can safely trim up to the comb.

It has worked very well for me.

Hi Lynn...

You already got great advice...so I just want to encourage you you...and check in and see how you and Casey are today?

I'm sure all will go well at the Vet...and I hope that you're feeling better too!

yes, it happens. One of the first times I cut Lolas nails, she flinched a little and I cut WAAAAy too short. Of course, we had a play date planned with a friend's dog about 15min after the cut, so I thought it would have healed up by then. Boy, was I wrong. We get to our friends' house, and Lola got a case of the zoomies, trailing blood EVERYWHERE. It was a nightmare. We had to leave, and I offered to pay to get my friends' carpets shampooed. Very embarassing. It happens to us all.
Casey's home. Patched back together again! That was an expensive snip. Now I'm glad I went for the pet insurance. Thanks again everyone!

a friend of mine just cut her doodle's leg when she was grooming her clipper. She felt so bad too. Don't be mad or feel bad. i'm sure you've cut yourself at some point too. And Casey is not going to be mad at you and it'll heal right up good as new.
This stuff happens, but I am sorry for you and Casey.  I make my dh hold the dog while I cut the mat.
Oh boy and here am I planning to do all my own grooming though I have memories of clipping a nail too short on one of my dogs and cutting another's ear many moons ago. Casey looks a little sorry for herself but she will be right as rain in no time at all. I tend to cut across the mats on my Maltese near the top of it but still leaving a little which I then tease out. This means I can't go near the skin.
I like the idea of a groomer who will do it for me as frequently as needed and not charge, sounds like a gem.
