I'm just wondering if my age has anything to do with how
much I want this puppy. Empty nest syndrome or what.

Maybe you are just a really nice person who has lots and lots of love to give!  That is one lucky puppy you will be bringing home!

Oh Nicky you are too funny!  But I do think that you might have something there.....I think that women in general need to 'nest' and need to 'mother' things and once our human children are out of the house, that instinct does not go away.  Also, we don't have the 'diversions' that women who still have kids in the house.  With our nest empty, there is a lot of quiet.  At least you have a DH.  Mine flew the coop too so I am REALLY, REALLY, REALLY dying to get my puppy to bring some life back into my home.

The great part of all this is that here on DK, we all know what you are going through and a lot of us are going through it right now with you.  I've got 28 more days and it has already seemed like an eternity.

Nicky...you are so insightful.  You just made me go hmmmm!  I was not blessed with children...I will hopefully be menopausal in May of this year...last summer I really started lobbying HARD for a puppy.  Mind you, I did not grow up with dogs, I was never a dog person.  My DH was the dog lover, and really wanted a dog.  So, here I am pushing for a puppy and he is not in favor of getting one.  Too much work, tied down (our family scattered - CA, MN, FL), etc.  My need to fill a void due to never having children over came all!  And DH LOVES his little girl.  He is constantly in awe at how smart, good, and loving she is.  He thinks she is almost perfect (she barks when people go by the front...especially with dogs...and she goes crazy when someone comes to the door...I have been working on that and she has gotten tons better...I will be scheduling a trainer to come out soon to help us with that)!

So, is it still a chocolate male?

I do know what you mean Nicky...

Before we got Sasha...I told my husband that I either wanted to have another baby...or get a Doodle!!  Lol...

Needless to say...we got our girl Sasha...and she brings such love and joy into our lives!

She was just was I wanted and needed in my life...at the perfect time in my life!

Can't wait to see your Chocolate Boy Nicky!

The time is getting near...

Well, sometimes I think my dogs are the surrogate grandchildren.
I think you may be on to something too, but it may not be specific to menopause. I really want to have a baby, but haven't met the right person yet. I've thought about doing it on my own. I want to give myself a little more time to try to meet someone though. I think that may be part of the reason I really want a puppy.
My children are all grown and gone, then we moved to FL where I am mostly alone due to dh's travel.  It was my dh who was the dog person, we always had Labs but this time I was the one wanting a dog, smaller, more portable, easier for me to handle.  I told my husband that I was "getting a boyfriend or a dog - you pick"  and here came Rooney Doodle - lol!!!!  I'm a mommy once again and I love it!!!!  Being a 20 pd doodle, Rooney is like having a toddler all over again.
travel job...........hmmm  i dont know.  DH is being lured to take a job that woulld require travel.  I said it has to be xxx more than his current job, cause i  would certainly miss him too much./   we will see what the"big guy" has to offer. I dont think I could do well without  him at week at time.  :(  My only girl is grown and lives 8 hours away.  i would have to get more animals to make do.......
Maybe, because you gave love away unconditionally to your family for most of your life you are ready to enjoy that feeling and security for yourself and what better way to enjoy unconditional love than that of a beautiful golden doodle puppy!
You know this is an interesting topic.  I never had children, so my nest is the same now as it always was.  I never had the Mother instinct.  I was the "career girl", designer bag, shoes and suit etc.  We got a puppy when we were first married and I never had a real attachment to her.  She was a nuisance in the beginning because I always had to come straight home from work.  Don't get me wrong, I loved her, but not in the same way.  Now I'm a non working, jeans, t-shirt and flip flop wearing Doodle Mom and I've never been happier!
Isn't it funny how these doodles change the way we USED to be... I was a total germ freak (well still am) , but... tori gets up on the furniture and just recently I even let her sleep in our bed... if my family actually knew she slept in my bed, I think they may send the men with the white coats because they would think I totally flipped!  I did, actually... flipped for my doodle!
Oh I guarantee my need for a puppy came exactly after the daughter got married....I waited the year we planned the wedding and she left the house  the year before but she got married Oct 10 2009 and Daisy was born Oct 27th 2009....she was meant to be mine and we picked her up after Christmas when she was almost 13 weeks old.
