This evening (9 days post spay surgery) i noticed that Ginger has a soft lump on her belly on one side of her stiches.

Has anyone else had this and if so what was it and was it OK?

As I recall my daughter's Ridgeback had it as well as my neighbor's GoldenDoodle.  It is normal.  They have internal stitches that dissolve and there is also a bit of tissue swelling that goes along with the surgery.  I really don't think there is anything to worry about.  To feel better just give the Vet a call but I am pretty sure they are going to say it is nothing.  My Gracie had a thing that was poking against the skin so it gave the impression that they had left a toothpick inside that was trying to poke its way through the skin.  I was freaked out!!  I rushed her into the vet and they said it was the internal stitches and that one of the ends was too long or something like that.  They said that it could poke through and if it did I could just snip it off...no way!  Well, it dissolved on it's own within a week or so but it sure had me going.  But to ease our minds it is always worth a phone call.  Hope I am correct on this one!!!

Thank you so much for your response!  I couldn't have snipped it off either!!!!!

Yes, this happened with Tara about 2 weeks after her spay surgery. Up until that point everything looked great. Then one day I checked the incision area and there was a lump! Of course the first thing I though of was INFECTION!!!  So I called the vet. They wanted to check it and it turned out to be, as Nancie said, internal stitches that apparently some dogs react to when they dissolve. Eventually the entire incision area swelled up but then it just resolved on its own without any treatment and it didn't seem to bother her at all.
Thanks..I feel better now.
As long as this area doesn't get very red, or angry looking and isn't really hot or you see pus it's probably normal healing.
Jordan had a serve reaction to her internal stitches. It was a nightmare but thankfully My vet also owns the ER Vet because it was Xmas Eve night. She ended up ok but her spay scar is "ugly". :)
It is normal for females to have a "pea size" bump near the incision site. Our vet warns everyone post spay. As everyone else said as long as it is not red, raw, or iritated it is normal.
I think it's pretty normal, Chloe had that and we were also freaked out that they ruined her. It did go away on it's own but she's a licker so we had to watch that she didn't irritate it!
Both Penny and Biscuit have had these lumps as well - they are tissue swelling due to the stitches and surgery.  They are more common than not - nothing to worry about, unless the stitches pop or there is redness/swelling around the area.

It is definitely normal if like F said there are no signs / symtoms of infection, Redness, heat, oozing, foul odor, etc. It is normal tissue swelling, a small pocket of fluid can accumulate around the site. It is a healing response. Bella had it too. Her's was a bit warm to the touch and I sat her on an ice pack to help with the swelling and she loved it. No harm in that if you think she will tolerate and and benefit from it.
