HELP!!!! Toby Shredded and Ate an SOS Pad.....

Toby grabbed an SOS pad from the kitchen counter and in a split second it was shredded and gone!!!!!  I called the vet, they said to give him white rice and water, if he starts vomiting or gets diarrhea take him to emergency ASAP. These cleaning pads are wirey and I fear it will cause damage, or not pass at all.....which the vet said would result in surgery....  How long does it normally take for something to pass through?  The vet said to watch him closely through the night.  We have always been so careful, our house is so child-proofed (doodle proofed), we never had to child proof this much for the kids or grandkids.....I just hope we can get through this with no consequences, then no more SOS pads in the house!!! And, yes, the baby gate goes back up to block off the kitchen .  I am worried sick about this!!!!!

Oh no! Well, when my Sunny ate a balloon (popped it, then swallowed the rubber part whole before I could get it) it came out in her stool the next day. I'm sure that a bigger item would take a little longer, maybe 2-3 days.

They weren't worried about the chemical cleaner in the SOS pad?   I am so sorry this happened to you and poor Toby.   I would be worried sick too.   Can  you call the Emergency Vet Clinic for a second opinion?

DO NOT TRY TO INDUCE VOMITING WITHOUT CALLING VET FIRST.  Not sure if peroxide would cause a chemical reaction with the sos pad.  I wouldn't risk it without checking first.

A quick search on google shows Toby is not the first to eat a SOS pad.  Here is the first forum I found where a dog ate one:

Maybe you can call SOS company and ask them about the chemicals.  Also, if OKed by the Vet maybe you could feed him some bread (I've heard of feeding cotton too but I dont know if it is safe) to hopefully coat the sharp pieces.  I would call the emergency vet to see what they say too & to get a second opinion.  Hope Toby is OK!

OH MY!  I didn't even think of that fact that SOS has chemicals on it.  I hope all is OK with Toby and you find some AMAZING S#*T in the backyard in a day or two.  We had a dog that used to each sponges, bras, panties, etc., and you never knew what was going to turn up in the daily deposit.  LOL.  Rua, thank goodness, is only into tissues!

Sorry but I would be taking him to the E.R.  If he vomits might the scratchy part not damage his throat?  Stay calm but I would get an x-ray at the least to see what is going on. Let us know how you and Toby are doing.  Saying a prayer for a simple passage.

I apologize if I alarmed you earlier, but wanted to respond before I left to pick DD up from soccer.  One of the moms is a vet tech, so I asked her about this.  It is basically a soap pad, which would cause irritation, nausea and vomiting.  But like any other non food object there is a possiblity of obstruction, just like your vet said.  Deb said sometimes cotton balls are used to help these types of objects pass.  So maybe you could ask your vet about this.  Hopefully it will pass thru with no problems.  Keep us posted.

We are going to watch him VERY close overnight, When I asked about the chemical /cleaner, the vet said only white rice and lots of water tonight,  we are not going to induce vomiting...I am also worried about the wire in the SOS pad. We also called the ER and basically they said monitor him closely and if there are  ANY changes in him  we should bring him in ASAP.   I will be watching over him every minute through the night.and am prepared to take him in at a minutes notice.........or sooner....Thank you all for your concern. I will keep you posted.

Debbie - pack a bag now with everything you might need if you have to go.  Things for if he got sick in the car, credit card (ours doesn't take checks), water for you - it could be a long night, cell phone, a copy of his medical records if you have them.  Think ahead so you can leave asap.  I pray that you don't need to go but I'd be ready.

Thank you, Jane, for bringing this up, this is an excellent idea and is a good reminder for everyone to always be prepared in case of emergency!!

We have a tote bag hanging right next to the door which goes EVERYWHERE with us. We keep copies of his immunizations records, poop bags, portable drinking dish, 2 bottled waters, enough meds for two days (Toby has epilepsy so we always need to keep meds with us), contact info for vet and nearest emergency clinic, 2 bath towels, in case he has a seizure in the car, an extra collar and leash, just in case one was to break, enough food in a small container for one meal and a whistle.

My neighbors lab did this exact thing 2 years ago.  She did end up getting sick, however surgery was not needed & she was fine within 2 days.  She weighs 80 lbs, so not sure if this helps, but thought it would help you to know others have had this & been fine.
