Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Greetings!

We pick up our baby on August 9th. We are retired and go between three house in FL, NE, and AZ.  Would like your thoughts on puppy pads.

Miss Lilly is a F1B goldendoodle. She will weigh at the most 30 lbs. I was considering training her on puppy pads and using these when we travel not only when she is a baby but also as an adult. My thoughts are that when we stay in Hotels, I will not have to take her out at night, but just put a pad down in the bathroom.

thank you for your thoughts.

I just had a brand new puppy in the Hilton Ocala, FL for two nights.  Because we are potting training I asked to be put on the lowest available floor, a faster route to the outdoors, gave up being on the concierge floor :  I took my luggage and placed it so that the puppy was kept on the tile of the entry way and bathroom one night and the first night I took the large soft sided travel kennel in with me.  We did great.  I am not a fan of pee pads - this is just my opinion mind you (no offense but you asked) but the idea of waking up to a 30 pd. or even any sized dog pee and poop laying right there is - yucky - think of the smell.  Having to take your puppy outside to potty isn't at all hard when traveling AND it gets you and the puppy outside for exercise and socalization.  Good luck on your decision.

Hi Mimi...

How exciting to be getting Miss Lily in August!!

We travel for business twice a month from South Carolina to New Jersey...with Sasha of course..lol....and we have no problem at all.

Sasha was crate traiined from the very beginning...and she still sleeps in her crate and loves it!

We also traiined her to "do her business outside"...as you would with any other puppy...and it worked beautifully.

She didn't have any problem with her routine when she went from house to house...and she was perfectly fine "going" in different places when we traveled.

Thankfully...Sasha travels well...so she is perfectly content for the 12-13 hour drive...and we do stop for potty breaks...and give her water...etc.

In answer to your question...you wouldn't have a need to use a pad to train Miss Lily...simply because you will be traveling a lot.

She will be able to catch on to her routine.

Her routine will be "normal" for her!  (smile)

I've never used pads...so I'm really not able to comment on them...I'm sorry.

I hope this is helpful..and I wish you the very best of luck!

If I can be of help in any way...please let me know....

Eh' I don't really like potty pads. I think the idea of them is nice, you can stay on a higher level floor in an apartment or hotel and not worry about getting up early to climb down flights of stairs to take a dog out...but from every dog I've seen use a potty pad, they are nasty...half the time they don't get everything on the pad, but right beside the pad instead...how do they know if their little behind is actually RIGHT over the pad...they don't. They just know they smell the pad and they are near it...so in that case, the clean up time is just as long as the walk them outside to do their business time.
I would stick with the crating idea and have a well trained pup. The pads would be smelly and messy...remember these little guys pee and poop a lot the first while, so you would have to be prepared for a lot more clean up. Just my opinion, but you need to do what is best for your lifestyle. Enjoy your puppy :)

I would not start with the pee pads......

Crate train and take her outside if possible!!!

I would just train regularly as well.  It won't be long before puppy will be able to sleep all night anyway.  In a hotel I also always ask for a room at the far end of the hallway as well as that way there aren't people walking past the room talking and making the girls bark all the time.  Depending on the hotel type a lot of times there is a door at the end as well which makes going outside easier when you do have to go out.
thank you fellow doodle lovers...you made my decision easier and I will forgo on the pads. My husband thought I had lost my last brain cell when I mentioned it to him and showed him the ad on the plane Monday. He will be happy to know that he wont have to carry around one more thing when we travel.
I am not a fan of pee pads either. I just prefer them doing their business outside, unless they learn to use the toilet and flush...LOL!

So Laurie...

Let me know you trained Fudge and Vern to "Go...and then To Flush"!!

I'll have to let Sasha know that her buddies know how to do that...and she "Needs To Get With The Program"!!  Lol...

Hey, I'd be happy to flush for mine if they'd use the facilities.
It seems unanimous on the pads - I don't like them either.  I used them with our last dog & she not only missed sometimes, but then she would tear them up to shreds & eat pieces of it with her pee on it.  It was disgusting & then she got to where she would only go on those & never really learned how to go outside very consistently.  I'd never do that again.
No pads gets my vote too! While it's theoretically spot-specific, you really just end up training your dog to go to the bathroom inside.  You have chosen wisely!
