I am sooo in love with Bexter that I now want another doodle. Besides, reading about all you 2 dood families is making me crazy! I e-mailed my breeder about getting first pick for maybe next summer litter hopefully with the same parents, so Bexter can have a full sibling! However, I told her I wanted 1st pick for a girl. However, after reading about some of your doodle brothers (Guinness & Murphy, Rooney & Stuart...) I now am wondering should I get another boy? Any opinions on that? Which combination gets along better? Are there any of you DKers that have a boy & girl dog who are close? Thanks for the advice! If I want to change my mind & tell her I want a boy instead, I'd better do it soon so I can get 1st pick of the sex I want. Thanks!
You should be fine either way. Since it works best if you get the 2nd dog FOR YOU then I say pick whatever you prefer. I like having one of each for variety, and I've never had two males, but as long as you train and lead appropriately, it shouldn't matter one way or the other. I would be more concerned with fitting two compatible temperaments together.
Our trainer told us to go with one of each...a boy and a girl. However, my DD has two boys and they get along great and my dog sitter has only boy dogs and she is constantly bringing other dogs around them and no problems. Fudge is our girl and Vern is our boy and they have gotten along great since the beginning and we have really had no problems.
I have 3 girls, and they all get along great. When I got my third, I wondered about getting a male for fear I was playing with fire adding another female. Well, needless to say we ended up with another girl and I do not regret it. Everyone is happy. Never had a fight, never even close. My lab mix Lucy who is 9 is def alpha. She keeps the two doodles Magnet 22 months, and Smudge 13 months in line, and they both respect her. But they have learned their role in the pack right away and understood it. Neither doodle test her or each other really. Your new puppy will have it's place in the pack immediately and he/she will be fine regardless of sex imo. Me and my girlz go visit my sister a lot who has 4 females herself. So when we go there, there are 7 females total. We have only had 1 squabble and that was my alpha Lucy and her alpha Ginger a few yrs ago. But now, everyone is one big happy family. I think you'll be fine with whichever you choose ;)
One of each has worked out perfectly for us they get along beautifully! Just like "skin kids", they have different personalities, they play well together, but have lots of down time when they leave each other alone. I just wanted a girl the second time so I could buy"girly things". I also agree that because he was neutered so young Oliver is sort of "gender neutral". Good luck with your decision, you can't go wrong .
Haha Ann...that's kind of why I wanted a girl the second time around too....girly things, although...Izzy does not act like a girl in any way!! Also, Temperament, personality and coat were extremely important to us.
We have one of each...Coco (1 year in a week and a half) - female; and Barney (10 weeks) - male. They get along great...however he will be much bigger than she full-grown, so we are "helping" her with being the dominant dog...he can play VERY rough...she has never even growled in her 1 year! So when we feel he is being too rough if she doesn't plop down on him (pinning him to the floor) one of us will get him by the neck and put him down like his mom would have. We're hoping he gets the message that he can't be that rough with her :) But they sleep together, play together, get in mischief together...it's so much fun :D
Oh my goodness! Seeing these pics of double doodles makes me want a 2nd one even MORE now! I asked my DH the other day what he thought about getting a 2nd one..... I totally thought he would say NO WAY. His response? " I think that would be fun!" Neither one of us have ever loved a breed as much as this one. I can't say enough about our breeder and her dogs. They are amazing. I am just wondering when would be the best time? Lucy is still young (10 months) So I am thinking a little big more time. But oh those pics!!! That added such fuel to the fire! SO SO SO precious!
Roxy was 11 mos. when we got Spencer. Spencer was 17 wks. Was this the best time to bring another pup into our house hold, I don't know. It was a bit crazy having two pups at the same time plus similar energy levels. All I know is that they have bonded wonderfully. Spencer looks to Roxy for so many doggy learning things. I would say, try and make sure your first one is good on lots of obedience such as sit, stay, down, etc. We worked really hard on Roxy, so she could show Spencer how it is supposed to go. We forgot to train her on not to bark because the barking for Roxy happened after Spencer was with us! Now she has taught him that and we are having to train them both! Sigh, so many things to think of. Having the two was my dream and it still is. Just be prepared, it can get a bit crazy with a lot of Zoomies!!!! Ah, but those DoodleKisses are so worth it!!!!
