Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

It is our first hot weekend (low 80s, which is about as hot as it gets here) and I took the dogs for a walk for our Sunday morning outing.  Harpo was walking from shade to shade and then resting.  Hondo used to to the same thing from the time he was a little pup (8-10 weeks), but Groucho never paid attention to him.  Now, however, Groucho is following Harpo.  The biggest problem is that we have mostly oak trees and poison oak grows under oak trees.  My husband cleaned up the dogs after we got home, and I hope none of us get poison oak.  So far, Hondo is the only doodle who got poison oak, but we will see with Harpo. Is this a labradoodle trait, since both of my labradoodles did it?  I thought it was funny when Hondo did it as a little pup, but now Harpo does the same thing.

Lynda, I just think they are smart Doodles!  Hope no one gets poison oak.  I am starting to get itchy thinking about it.
I think it just goes along with how smart they are.  My labradoodle, Charlie, does the same thing!  Luckily we have the live oak trees here that spread very wide so you can get the shade from pretty far away from the trunk!  These doodles are very intelligent!  Hope they are smart enough to stay away from the poison oak too!

Haley who is a light colored goldendoodle seeks shade.  Cole' (R.I.P) was a black chow mix and hugged shade.  He would not let the sun shine on his black coat from the time he was eight weeks old (when I adopted him) until he passed away at almost 14 years of age.

Hope you don't get poison oak.  I got it for the first time several years ago and was miserable.

Luna (mini GD) does this too on the 2nd half of our dog park walk.  We also did it in tandem with another dog at the dog park  - his owners were way ahead and the poor thing was a big black doodle of some sort so he was very hot.
Darwin is definitely one that does this. He will find shade, even if it's 40 degrees outside!
Lola does it ALL the time. She'll come to a full stop under the tree and refuses to move until she is "ready". It makes for a long walk!!!! Very smart, though!
Murphy has always done this as well and it was cute when we were just strolling as a puppy, however as we got to jogging pace when he was older, it became quite a nuisance when he'd just stop in his tracks and plop down like a sack of potatoes. I must say it was smart, as it was in Florida in the summer mostly. He doesn't do it quite as often now that he's older.
I regularly take Gavin for a 5km hike up the country road that lead to our cottage.  He likes to pick up the pace in the sun spots and slow down when we are in the shady spots.  It's quite commical really!  He also does not like going up the steep hill and will slow up and hang his head when we are approaching it.  I hate the hill too; maybe he is reading my energy lol!
I took  Quincy for a nice slow walk today, it's about  75 degrees which he is not used to, he just moped along and I was pulling him more than he was pulling me, then home for a romp in his pool, he is now a happy wet doodle.
It was 95 when Webber, Seda and I went for a walk today.  I'd have to get up at 5AM to avoid the heat of the day.  It barely cools down to 75 at night.  We cut the walk in half and came back to ice cold drinks.  My dogs are going to get chubby this summer!
I just think it's a smart thing for them to do! We have a very old dog in our neighborhood who walks from one yard to the next and plops down for as long as he likes-he eventually moves on but he takes lots of rests (even in winter) Doodle see doodle do!!
Scout also does this. He hates the sun so much he'll only poop in the shade along our fence!
