I am looking for some advice about training Brady to do his 'stuff'  outside!!    He is 10 wks - so has been with me for 3 weeks.   Bed time he's very good and will wait until I let him out in the morning (the 2 times he did piddle on the hardwood floor by the door he made no sound so I ended up being unaware and stepped in it when taking him out in the morning :(  .      During the day he goes outside as long as I take him there.   I hear about little bells (how does a dog ring a bell anyway?   Pls. give me step by step lesson on getting him to do this.   I have 3 steps  from our main level down to the door gated to prevent him from getting down to the basement so he cannot actually reach the door on his own.   Am I being impatient  expecting more of him in this area by now?   We actually haven't had that many accidents but that's because I'm here all day and devoted to the training.   When I take him out in the morning I don't talk with him - only say "poop" and set him on the grass... after he goes -  .big, enthusiastic "good boy Brady" when he goes either peep or poop ....  then I wait silently for him to do the other and repeat praise.   I JUST WISH HE'D GIVE ME SOME INDICATION THAT HE NEEDS TO GO OUTSIDE!!!

Porter stares at me intensely and then walks to the back door.  I let him out and when he wants to come in, he smacks the back door with his paw.  Very quiet.  Yet, somehow he barks his head off at the mail carrier and if his dog-friends ignore him. :-)

You got great advice already--good luck!

As a follow up to this...can people tell me when I should expect my Goldendoodle to be reliable? She is now five months (24 pounds), does great at night, and generally does ok during the day. But I still feel like I need to watch her like a hawk. We take her out very frequently and reward her when she goes to the bathroom. At this point she is having one or two accidents a week (all pee), but those times are so discouraging! Our golden retriever was soooo much easier to train. I can only remember two accidents all together so this is new to me,
All great advice--and using the same words all the time really does help. Sometimes, I let my three doodles out and all three "go pee" on command--even the 6 month old--it's like "synchronized peeing!" My pup has been very reliable since he was three months old and took potty training very seriously--he will sit by the door and give me this look that says "Out now, please!' But all pups are different and mature at different rates--I would be concerned though if they are 7 to 8 months old and still having accidents--could be a lot of reasons for it, but worth looking in to.

Cooper took quite a long time to learn a way to tell us when she needed to go (I cant remember how long but it was months after she was potty trained). She never took to ringing the bells, though we tried. She would only ring them to go play.  Her way is to run from us to the door and back again, or to let out a little whimper. We used to take her out all the time as a puppy but now (at 2) she rarely has to tell us as we know her schedule/she knows our schedule.

out in the moring - pee and poop (if its our day off and we sleep in she may wake me up about half an hour after usual get up time)

out when we get home - pee and poop

out before bed - pee

If we are home all day she does often pee a few more times, and may or may not poop again

My two doodles were crate trained and the key is you must be persistant.  What you put in must come out (water - food).  Both my doodles were different in their pooping schedule.... Oliver would go about half hour after he ate, Sasha would go religiously in the morning and evening.  They were both 110% trained by 10-12 months old.  I would limit the water after 8 pm and take them out for the last time about 10 pm.  In the morning I would let them drink as much water as they wanted but about a hour before I left for work I would limit their intake and would come home on lunch to let them pee and poop if necessary.   Neither dog ever had a accident in the crate.  In general as soon as the puppy wakes from sleeping you must take the outside immediately !!!  I would watch when they ate and drank and then take them out accordingly.  I think it takes about 6-8 hrs for solid food to pass thru their system, my dog food bag states this and water about 1/2 hour, this is on my dogs, other dogs may be different.  As they get older the better control they have,  as stated earlier it was 10-12 months before my dogs were 110% trained, of course they would have a accident every once in a while before the 10-12 months, but in general they should be trained in 6-8 with  accidents here and there and 10-12 completely trained.   Good luck and be patient it will all come in due time.
Thanks so much for this.   Today I used the crate when I wasn't able to be completely on Brady.   I plan to continue with it.    Your doodles are gorgeous!

My mini took 7 months to be reliable.  Bigger dogs take less time.  It took all the patience I had, but she finally trained.  I was proud of her bc alot of 9 lb dogs never get it and hv to go on potty pads.

I empathathize with you.  It's really the worst part and then it is done and life is sweet again. Bells never have worked w/ Sheila.

Ours stare at us intently, Myla will wimper but they are pretty much on a schedule now.

We potty trained with the bells and both caught on right away Myla only had 2 accidents. Now they are older and Chloe will stare at you and bark if she wants out. We also took them out every 15 minutes as pups then they rang the bell then they rang the bell whenever they wanted attention or got mad at us. So now we don't use the bells we just watch for the signs. Try not to get upset when the accidents happen it takes patience.I wish you all the luck in the world.
