Hi Lynn,
We have a very active group here on Doodle KissesThe Food Group with over 700 members and many discussions about what we feed, when we feed, every kind of digestive issue imaginable, and lots more, including a list of recommended dog food brands and analyses of many popular foods. We also have discussions (and recipes) about cooking for your dog, and giving fresh foods. Please come join us.
You mentioned you are using half of can of wet and that might be the issue. When we got our labradoodle, our breeder suggested using 1 tablespoon of wet mixed with a little less than 1/4 cup very warm water which makes a gravy and then add the one cup of dry kibble and stir up. That way, it is not so rich - and all that soft food is really not good for their teeth. Our puppy is 7 months old now and still eating this mixture. Make sure the can food and kibble is the same brand.
I can sympathize with you because I once had a standard poodle some years ago that had allergies from the time he was a puppy. He was a very tall standard with a huge chest and he would get terrible bouts of gastritis which was very scary because I was always fearing it would turn into bloat! He also had a problem in that he seldom let gas! I decided to cook for him too, but through the advice of my vet realized they also need lots of vitamins, minerals, etc that just meat and rice does not provide. About the only dog food our boy could ever eat was Solid Gold Lamb product.
Good luck to you.
definately check out the food group - especially if you are home cooking (or giving home made raw meat diet)- it isnt as simple as just cooking some meat and rice.... you need to make sure your dog gets the appropriate nutrition, for example calcium. There are powders you can add to home cooking to make sure its a complete diet. Please, resaerch it very carefully - there will be people in the food group who can help you
I feed Cooper Orijen as the high protein food is the only kibble that will keep the weight on her - its a very popular brand here on DK. On my days off, Cooper and my 3 cats all get raw food - I much prefer this to the kibble, b ut DH and I get free kibble from work and we arent in a position to turn it down!
How was BLUE hard for her teeth? Dogs have super tough teeth that can chew through bones - if the food is too hard for her teeth, I suspect she had a problem with her teeth - take her to the vet for an oral check up.
Stay away from Eukaneuba, its very poor quality and Im not surprised she didnt like it (though dogs are like kids and often love the junk food!)
My kitten had terrible gas when we got him - now he doesnt have gas but his poop was still really stinky, we add probiotics to his food and that really helps. When he has raw he isnt stinky at all.
I feed my animals twice a day - 8am and 8pm
Is your pup eating fast - this may be contributing to the gas.... Or maybe she isnt digesting the grains very well
My puppy loves crush ice especially after he eats his food, so I leave him some as I depart for work. I agree 100% with white rice & chicken for settling your puppy's stomach.
You'll find great advice on this discussion board. Keep asking those questions.
My vet said bland food like white rice & chicken is good and settles our puppy's stomach. Depending on how old your dog is I wouldn't recommend hamburger or steak, but time will tell if it works for Casey.
Good luck
