Do you ever cook for your dog(s)?
What do you feed you dog(s)?
Have you ever had to switch food for a certain reason?
How many times a day does your dog(s) eat and at what time(s)?

Casey eats twice a day a 7 am and 5ish in the pm. She eats a cup of food each time.

We used to feed Casey Wellness but it gave her gas.
Then we gave her Eukanuba but she hated it and didn't eat it unless we hand fed it to her.
Then we used BLUE and she loved the food but it was hard for her teeth.
Finally we mixed half a cup of dry food and half a can of wet food. Both BLUE products.

That worked like a charm until Casey started having tummy troubles. Now we feed her rice and some type meat (chicken, hamburger, steak) but usally hamburger meat in the a.m. and pm. We feed her yogurt at lunch time.

Hi Lynn,

We have a very active group here on Doodle KissesThe Food Group with over 700 members and many discussions about what we feed, when we feed, every kind of digestive issue imaginable, and lots more, including a list of recommended dog food brands and analyses of many popular foods. We also have discussions (and recipes) about cooking for your dog, and giving fresh foods. Please come join us.

Thank you Karen, I forget if I am already part of that group but if I'am not, count me in!
Kona (4 yo) had trouble with gas until I started adding a probiotic to his meals. I feed the doodles Wellness Core and a spoonful of pumpkin and a 1/4 tsp of ProZyme twice a day. I am hoping when they finish this bottle of the probiotic they might do well with yogurt added to the food. The only food that seemed to work for Kona was Natural Balance for sensitive stomachs. I wanted to give them something more nutritious so that is why I switched.  I hope you are able to find success for Casey.

You mentioned you are using half of can of wet and that might be the issue.  When we got our labradoodle, our breeder suggested using 1 tablespoon of wet mixed with a little less than 1/4 cup very warm water which makes a gravy and then add the one cup of dry kibble and stir up.  That way, it is not so rich - and all that soft food is really not good for their teeth. Our puppy is 7 months old now and still eating this mixture.  Make sure the can food and kibble is the same brand.

I can sympathize with you because I once had a standard poodle some years ago that had allergies from the time he was a puppy. He was a very tall standard with a huge chest and he would get terrible bouts of gastritis which was very scary because I was always fearing it would turn into bloat! He also had a problem in that he seldom let gas! I decided to cook for him too, but through the advice of my vet realized they also need lots of vitamins, minerals, etc that just meat and rice does not provide. About the only dog food our boy could ever eat was Solid Gold Lamb product.

Good luck to you.

The food group can  help lots! We had to switch our dry food to Salmon due to allergies per pur vet with Chloe it did seem to improve, now we just switched them to grain free.

definately check out the food group - especially if you are home cooking (or giving home made raw meat diet)- it isnt as simple as just cooking some meat and rice.... you need to make sure your dog gets the appropriate nutrition, for example calcium. There are powders you can add to home cooking to make sure its a complete diet. Please, resaerch it very carefully - there will be people in the food group who can help you

I feed Cooper Orijen as the high protein food is the only kibble that will keep the weight on her - its a very popular brand here on DK. On my days off, Cooper and my 3 cats all get raw food - I much prefer this to the kibble, b ut DH and I get free kibble from work and we arent in a position to turn it down!

How was BLUE hard for her teeth? Dogs have super tough teeth that can chew through bones - if the food is too hard for her teeth, I suspect she had a problem with her teeth - take her to the vet for an oral check up.

Stay away from Eukaneuba, its very poor quality and Im not surprised she didnt like it (though dogs are like kids and often love the junk food!)

My kitten had terrible gas when we got him - now he doesnt have gas but his poop was still really stinky, we add probiotics to his food and that really helps. When he has raw he isnt stinky at all.

I feed my animals twice a day - 8am and 8pm

Is your pup eating fast - this may be contributing to the gas.... Or maybe she isnt digesting the grains very well

It wasn't exactly hard for her teeth, she chews ice cubes in under a second. She chews her food slowly and maybe it was too boring. She probably doesn't like the taste of just plain dry food.

My puppy loves crush ice especially after he eats his food, so I leave him some as I depart for work.  I agree 100% with white rice & chicken for settling your puppy's stomach.

You'll find great advice on this discussion board. Keep asking those questions.

We've had quite the saga with Lola's food lately. After months and months of testing various foods, we're not on a mix of Orijen and Fromm. The Orijen was giving her very loose stools (and we tried it for a couple of months), so the mixture is really firming things up. I'm thinking once we're done this bag of Orijen, we'll just stick to the Fromm. Good luck with your research! With the great people on DK, you'll find something in the Food Group that will work in a jiffy!

My vet said bland food like white rice & chicken is good and settles our puppy's stomach.  Depending on how old your dog is I wouldn't recommend hamburger or steak, but time will tell if it works for Casey.

Good luck

Low fat, very well-drained hamburger mixed with white rice is fine for dogs with upset stomachs. My vets have been recommending it for years. It just has to be very low fat (90% lean or more), then drained of all grease and rinsed in hot water before mixing.
I had a terrible time finding the right food but settled on TOTW which my two love.  They each get 1 cup dry and I  add 1/2 of a  container of Little Cesar wet to it for a treat.  They eat this around 6 am and then around 5 pm I put down 1 cup of dry in each of their bowls so they can graze if they want.  Doesn't sound like much food but keep in mind they are mini doodles.  They also get some treats during the day - maybe too many treats.  When they have upset stomachs I put them on lean hamburg and rice mix as instructed by their vet.
