I was always told that they should be able to walk in, turn around and lay down.  So that's the size I havet.  My new trainer told me they were way too small, especially since they were crated most of the day.  So, now I feel really bad that I wasn't giving them enough room.  I have been looking on craigslist for larger crates.  The one I have now is about 22w x 36 L.  Lucy cannot sit up without hunching over like Clifford the big red dog.  I may need to build on another room just to house the crates.  HELP!

Rosco grew to 27" tall (to the shoulder) and 80-90 lbs.  I got him an XL crate (don't recall measurements) and now Boca (who is not anywhere as big uses it).
Reading Laurie's response, I think mine is the 48" one.
The 800 or 900 series crates from Petco are what I have.  Right now they are on sale with free shipping.  I have never been lucky enough to find a good used crate.
I just bought the 800 series from petco online. I looked at it in the store thought it was a good size. It was at least $20. cheaper online with free shipping. I was told my puppy may weigh 80bs.

Fudge is 46 pounds and Vern is 90 pounds. I have two crates for them and both are the same size. Even though I do not crate them any longer, Vern sleeps in his crate still and takes up the whole length of his crate when he is inside. Here is the one I think I ordered from Amazon:

The measurements are:

42"L x 28"W x 31"H

Thank you for the help. Out Petsmart no longer stocks the wire crates, so off to look online.

Lowes also carries crates and we found them to be less expensive then Petsmart!  Libby is a medium and weighs 48 - 50 lbs. and our crate is an XL.  She no longers sleeps in it, but when we leave she stays in the crate and seems to be very comfortable.

I would get the one that Laurie recommended. (Midwest Life Stage 42 x 28 x 31).  I have the Midwest 36 x 24 x 27 but Bo is a large medium and will probably be around 55 lbs full grown.  Laurie has the next size up and I think it will be plenty big for a standard doodle unless he/she is over 80 lbs.  If so the next size up from that I believe is a 46'.
I started with the 36 x 24 and that now is a good size for my Medium ALD.  But I had to go up to the 42 x 28 (Midwest Life Stages) for my standard as her head was hitting the roof of the smaller one.
Thank you for the suggestions.  Off to do some shopping.
SCORE!  I ordered 2 800 series two door crates.  Shipping was free, so I only paid $169 for both.  While I did find several on Craigslist, they were asking about the same price as the new ones.  I'd rather have new if they're the same price.  Thanks again for all of your help.
Darwin is 63lbs, and 25" tall at the shoulders. I got him the largest crate I could find (XL) it's 48" wide and 32" tall. (it's HUGE, there was a pic of a St Bernard on the box) I wanted him to have room to spread out and he loves it.
