Hi all - potentially a really stupid question - but....how do you get the odor out of your dog's collar?  Toby has a smell about him right now, and I'm pretty sure it's the collar.  We only have one collar, so I need to wash it, squeeze it dry as best I can, and put it back on.  Is there something that works best for getting dirt and scents out of the collar?

If it's a cloth collar, just toss it into the washing machine along with your reg laundry. Does you dog get wet a alot? The smell may not be coming from the collar. Dogs who get wet a lot and do not dry right down to the skin can start to smell like a dirty mop. While they seem dry on the top the coat stays damp underneath. This can also lead to skin issues.
I put Charlie's collar in the washing machine, then let it air dry.  Did it out of necessity one time when he decided to roll in some random poop that was in the backyard, and it worked.  I don't know if that is the best way to do it but couldn't stand the smell!!
I'd be interested to hear what suggestions others have too!  We have tried washing them in baby shampoo, laundry detergent, dish washing liquid etc etc and they don't get the smell out.  I end up buying them new collars when they get too bad, but I hate spending the money for a new collar when there is nothing wrong with the old ones except the smell!!  We always take their collars off when we get home after swimming or being out in the rain, and they don't wear them at night which does help to prolongue the life of the collar a bit!!
Toby doesn't get wet much, no.  I have tried shampoo, and I definitely don't want to throw out the collar!
I thought about putting them in the washing machine, but worried that the buckles might damage my machine!!
Put it in a pillow case. This will protect you machine if you have the glass fronted one....
This is really a smart idea. I did not do this one time with a front loader machine, and it did cause problems with my machine. Just stick it in a pillow case or maybe a lingerie bag.
Oxy Clean!
Wilson has rthe Lupine collars  and I just throw them in the washing machine with towels..come out like new and fresh smelling!
i soak it in the sink for about an hour with some laundry detergent....then I take a nail brush and scrub scrub scrub!!!! (along the grain) then hang to dry. It looks brand new!!!
I have not had this problem (yet).  Maybe put some baking soda in a zip lock bag along with the collar for a few days??  Or wash with white vinegar... I find vinegar is a natural way to remove odors.

Hi

Our Doodle Sadie is in and out of our pond all the time. I just put the collar in a mesh bag put it in the washing machine and then add vinegar to the final rinse and let the collar dry in the sun.Works well for me.
