Vinegar and water works, yes. Toby hates it, but it gets rid of the odor.
Do I just put the solution of vinegar and water on a washcloth and wipe Jakes beard? He too has such a smelly face. Its not his ears.Difinatley coming from beard and its short!
The smell is caused by bacteria. If there is a matte there it could be a hot spot. If no matting, then just bacteria. Having a wet beard does it. I keep my beards short and I trim around the lips for about 1/4 inch to keep hair from curling in the mouth.
You can lift an earflap and take a sniff there. It should just smell mostly warm. Any unpleasant yeasty odour means you need to attend to his ears.

We are having the same problem. Our doodle is always wet! So her face and neck are not fresh and she takes forever to dry. I trimmed her beard and it helped a tiny bit. It just kept getting worse. Then, I noticed her collar smelled like a dirty dishcloth. So after washing the collar and face, I took her to the vet because her ear was a tiny bit red.Just didn't know what else to do. It turns out that she had a yeast infection in her ear! Once that cleared up, the smell went away. .
Murph often gets a "smelly beard". I just put a little shampoo and warm water in the sink and soak a wash cloth in that solution and wipe it down. It helps for a couple of days. Part of his problem is that his food is mushy and so some of it gets trapped in the hair.
