Cooper is a mess! She usually barely mats, but recently, she is matting like crazy. She is 2 so its not the coat change. I think maybe its because last time I gave her a big brushing (which I do about once a month) I really dampened her down with a lot of water so the fluff turned into curls and kinks straight away.

So now we are on a BIG brushing...... which she hates. As soon as I go to the "Coopy Cupboard" she runs to her crate and wont come out. Now, this free standing closet doesnt just hold her grooming equipment, it also has cookies, meat treats, chews, kibble, towels, backpack, harnesses, leashes etc, and its also where we hide the kittens favourite toy (a feather wand with a bell on it) which we get out every night for special Mommy/Kitten time. So when I go there it doesnt necessarily mean that shes getting groomed! But once shes had her first brush or cut in a while, she runs away just in case. I have been brushing her since she was a tiny puppy (well, no she was never really tiny!) so she is used to it, but maybe I dont do it often enough for her to feel comfortable. I never brush her for really long periods of time (half hour - hour stints) and she gets lots of high value treats. She will let me groom her - no growling or nipping, and if she tries to move away I tell her to "wait" and she stays put, but she makes it very clear from her huffing and pouting that she doesnt like it.

Anyway, I diverge!

Coopers fur is between 5 and 6 inches long. Last summer I scissor cut her down to 2 inches, but so far it hasnt been hot enough to warrant it, and I really like her fur long. Ive been growing her head fur longer as her head looked really small compared to her furry body. But now her ears seem to be too long.... they are dangling in her water, which isnt a big deal as she drips water everywhere from her beard anyway! But its nasty when she has raw. They dont look too long - actually its the one thing that makes her look girly (I think). They are about 8 inches from the top base of her ear to the end, and if I pull them under her chin, they cross over by  about 1 1/2 inches

How long are your doods ears? Should I give them a trim?

LOL.  Love it.

I used to have a cocker spaniel that I would put his ears up that way.  Be careful not to keep them back too long because they loose blood circulation and when the band comes off it hurts them.  I learned the hard way.

I don't put them back that tight. If Sunny shakes her head, the band comes off.
That is the cutest thing!!!
that's such an awesome idea! I'm going to try it too!
Sedona's ears are "normal" - whatever that is - so we don't really have a problem with drippy ears.  However, I have heard of people with long-eared dogs getting snoods.  They're probably available from some pet product supplier.
i have a lot to learn - what is a snood????

Here's another picture:

I think I heard that the ears if they are long should be even with the jaw line or there abouts.  Either that or if you pull them to the front of the nose they should come together right in the middle.   My Gracie Doodle has very long fat wide ears and when they get too long she looks like an old frumpy lady.  She is much cuter and perky looking when I shorten them up!
I think the ears should be whatever length you like.  As long as you're trimming only hair : )
I like keeping my dood's ears long because she just looks adorable with them long! I keep her face and body short, and her ears and tail very long.
