It has been 20 years since I have had a female dog. This weekend I am taking care of Java, my sister’s female toy poodle. I just took her out to pee and she LIFTS HER LEG to pee and scratches the grass when finished. (Haley, incidentally, does not lift his leg to pee, ever.) How many of you with female doodles or other female dogs have one that exhibits such behavior?

I will have to laugh about that.  There never has been a trainer.  I know it's hard to believe.
I find it very comical - a 65 pound male doodle who does not lift his leg nor does he scratch grass when finished and a 6 pound female poodle who not only does the leg lift but scratch too! Oh, and she does not hesitate to correct Haley when he gets too close to her.

I have a 100 lb male that doesn't lift his leg....but he looks like a horse peeing. No scratching either.

Little Finn scratches like crazy...nearly falling over when I first got him at 6 weeks.

Both of my boys - pee like a girl.  They squat and there is not scratching.  Love it.

Too funny.  I have never seen a girl dog pee like a boy!

Sedona will lift a leg occasionally, depending on if her stream is a bit crooked :)   She's also a grass kicker-upper - not always, but quite often.  I can't figure out what makes certain times require the grass kicking.

Yes, I feel that it is a learned behavior. My female Golden Retriever wasn't a leg-lifter until my male Portie joined the family. She wanted to be like her brother. She has since passed away and my Portie now has issues with arthritis, so he no longer lifts his leg to pee. I'm wondering whether my new 5-month-old male Dood will ever start leg-lifting, seeing how big brother doesn't.
Chloe pees like a lady-Myla well she's Myla...she usually squats and lifts her left leg in the air why she is going and she does the scratching of the grass and Chloe does not.
