Tonight while I was enjoying a glass of wine on the patio I watched in horror as a car took a left turn and and sent a guy on his bike flying through the air. He bounced on the ground. He was concious but he clearly hit his head and broke his arm. It was horrifying to watch, but I was impressed with how quickly and efficiently everyone responded. He is lucky it wasn't worse. I'm still feeling a little traumatized by it all. I can't imagine how the guy driving the car must have felt.

This exact same scenario almost happened to me once about 10 years ago, but the car missed me. Unfortunately I had hit my brakes hard in panick and went flying off my bike, if it weren't for the fact that my foot got caught I would have gone head first into the ground. The doctor chided my for not wearing a helmet, saying that one of his patience had recently died from a similar accident and a helmet would have saved him.

So I just wanted to say for all you bike riders out there - please wear your helmets when you ride your bike. It could save your life.

A good reminder.  Several years ago my sister had a "single bicycle" accident.  She does not to this day know what happened.  She was riding along and came to on the ground with people standing over her.  She shattered her collar bone and her helmet was cracked but her head was not hurt.  She always wore her helmet and this saved her serious head damage or death.

Good reminder!! I'd like to add that it's not just bikes and motorcycles though- rollerbladers and skaters and skateboarders need to wear helmets too!

I have a big scar on my forehead from falling off my skateboard, but luckily I was wearing a helmet and didn't injure myself badly. I also have a scar on my scalp somewhere from falling on my rollerblades, but I wasn't wearing a helmet! I wouldn't have that scar if I'd been wearing a helmet.

Now that I rollerblade with Sunny, I make sure I'm protected in case she sees a squirrel and jerks me off the skates.

Thanks Sherri! What a horrible thing to see. My nephews have to wear their helmets for EVERYTHING and they are constantly using their razor scooters. One day mom came home and the neighbor was watching them for 2 hours. They know the rules so she didn't feel she had to spell it out for her neighbor. Mom asked where the helmets are? They were so busted. they were still hanging in the garage! No more razors that summer! Both my Sister and her husband are sheriffs and they have seen the worst of the worst so this is why they are strict. But I'm happy that they were busted that day. I love those little boogers!

Sherri,

You sure have had lots of crazy things happen to you lately!  That would have scared me to death seeing that!  I'm glad everyone seems to be ok.

That must have been terrible to see.  I hope the guy makes a full recovery.
Thanks for sharing.  Serves as a reminder to all of us...safety first!

My hubby is an avid bike rider and he always wears a helmet.  Every Saturday he meets up with his buddies to ride the trails along the river.  Every week he comes home saying he sees families out riding - the kids are wearing helmets but the parents aren't.  Everyone should wear a helmet.

Thanks Sherri for the reminder.
