I bought several beds for Sunny, but she prefers the floor or wherever I am. Right now she's snuggled up next to me on the couch!
At night, she sleeps either in my bed or in my beanbag.
My dogs sleep on human pillows, our bed, or a couch. Yes, my dogs have their own couch. The doodle couch. We have a nice cot--for dogs, but I'm ready to donate the cot to the shelter.
Nothing is better than a couch in front of the big picture window. Just ask my dogs :)
Years ago, I too wondered whether my dog would use an expensive foam dog bed if he had one. So, I took one of my old queen-size eggcrate foam bed toppers, cut it into four large rectangles, stacked the pieces on top of each other and stuffed them into a bed cover that I bought on sale for $6 at Drs. Foster & Smith. Hercules spent most of his time on that bed during the colder season, and about half-time during the warmer weather, because the ceramic tile floor kept him much cooler. Now you can barely see my floor because I have four large expensive dog beds with different thicknesses for him and Zeus to choose from.
Anyway, you might want to try this inexpensive method to "test the waters" with Riley before breaking open the piggy bank. If you don't have any unneeded foam laying around, I noticed Big Lots had large foam beds for about $20, which were actually not a bad quality.
Tara's order of bed preference:
1. Hardwood floor
2 Donut bed (fun to play in and cozy for sleeping (she ate the first one we got her though!)
3 Old grungy flannel sheet
4. Large "regular" dog bed (stuffed but flat) Rarely used. I don't think she would miss it if it disappeared.
I don't know about others but it took a while for Tara to realize that a bed was for laying on and not just a giant stuffy waiting to be unstuffed. :)
