Can anyone reccomend a brand for the dna testing? I am interested in what the results are like and what kind to pick since Huskins is a stray and I have no inkling about any purebread in him.

I would recommend the Wisdom Panel (http://www.wisdompanel.com/) because it has the largest breed identification list. PetsMart also sells the home kit.
Do some research first--are these things really accurate?

We had Tara genetically tested last fall using the Wisdom Panel Insights test. Tara is an ALD and we bought her from a breeder who had all of her ancestry well documented. The DNA test indicated she was 1/4 Puli which means her grandparents would have been Puli.. There is NO evidence of this breed in any of her documentation.

I discussed the issue at length with the company and at that time they told me that their testing was not really accurate or appropriate for multi-generational cross breeding which is the case with ALD's.  If your dog is a first cross, such as Golden Retriever + Poodle+= Goldendoodle, their testing is more likely to indicate the breeds accurately.

interesting, what is Puli?

This is a Puli. They come in many different colors and their hair is corded (dreadlocks)

I love that look, but it is soooooooo much work.  My ALD obviously has some Puli in him, but we have not had much success with cording.
The coat does look high maintenance! Especially a WHITE one!!
naaa.  Just don't bathe them.  ugh
According to my dog encyclopedia, the Puli "is almost certainly the ancestor of the Poodle". The weight range is 22-33 lbs. and height is 14.5-17.5". The coat colors are black, white, and apricot. It shows a picture of a puppy Puli that looks just like a mini Doodle because the hair isn't corded. That's pretty cool.

Yes, and there are some rumors that Puli's where bred into the ALD's in Australia early on. So  Tara could have some Puli genes in her but not to the degree that showed up on the test (1/4).

They really are adorable as puppies and do remind me of doodles too at that age!

Hey guys! We did the Wisdom Panel Insights and they have recieved our cheek samples as of last Thursday. I just can't wait the 2 or 3 weeks they say it takes to process the DNA. Hopefully you got yours sooner. We are expecting to get some crazy mutt results like beagle, poodle, yorkie mix, hehee! He's just so little, I doubt he is actally a labradoodle. Who cares though, we love him no matter what. Maybe he is 1/2 goldendoodle 1/2 neighborhood mutt! I guess that would show up retriever and poodle each 25% as I understand. I hope I will be able to understand the results when I do finally get them. I responded to you quite ago while through email, not realizing it was "donotreply". I'm a dumb newbie, I guess!
Cheryl, if I remember correctly it was closer to 2 weeks than three weeks when I did it but that was about a year ago. It probably depends on how busy they are!  It did seem like FOREVER though because I was so eager to get the results. The results are pretty easy to understand. It will be fun to find out what Huskin's turns out to be-but remember it might not be totally accurate-like Tara being 25% Puli!! We did have fun calling her a Pulidoodle for a while though!! LOL!!  Keep us posted!!
