Today we took Molly to the vet to have her checked out.. She is in great shape, healthy as can be. Temperament shining through, very confident in herself. She is doing great. Weighs 5 pounds 9 ounces.

I again asked the vet about Jack licking himself so much, not acting like himself etc.. She ran another urine test. His urine was so bad, so full of infection, crystal, strubites and his PH was nearly 8. Which is very high...

The biggest issue . Jack having not had any breakfast at all had glucose in his urine, in order for glucose to show up in urine it has to be above 240 on the test strip.. Since he had not eaten, they tested blood and sugar was almost 300.

This is very indicative of diabetes. His sugar should be under 100. This would explain a lot of Jack's excessive drinking and sleepiness that he has been feeling.

I asked if the bladder infection could cause his glucose to be elevated because I know in humans when a human is sick sometimes their sugar could be elevated.. She said not this high.

We are going back first thing in the am. More blood work and then we have referrals to specialist.. I know how to manage a human with diabetes but not a dog.... They didn't say for sure he had it but they don't know what else would make his sugar so high.

I have taken him there so many times because of his licking his pee pee, we made jokes on here, but I still took him to the doctor..

No wonder he is licking himself so badly.. he has a horrible bladder, kidney infection and is possibly diabetic. I am praying so hard it is not diabetes.. all I think about with that is blindness, kidney disease and all kinds of other issues...

Best case is we will have to change his food because his body can not handle that amount of protein and that the whole blood sugar being through the roof is a fluke.... I don't think it is because Jack has had a major change of personality lately where he has lost so much of his energy, and just wants to sleep so much. I chalked it off to him getting older...

I am so tired from Molly that I can't think straight.. To think something is wrong with Jack is beyond anything I can handle right now.. For now he is on antibiotics AGAIN and he is getting treated with a lot of love. He can not eat after eight tonight and we will try again and pray for different results tomorrow.

Anyone have a diabetic dog before?

I don't know anything about diabetes, so I don't have any advice.  Just try to relax and hang in there until the vet can run more tests tomorrow.  You can't do much until you know more.

Oh, this is horrible timing for you isn't it? I'm so sorry that Jack is going through this. I hope that it is not severe.

A friend of mine has a cat with diabetes, and it is relatively easy to treat. She gets 2 injections daily and has a limited diet. That's all!

Oh Jennifer, all I can say is I am so sorry to hear this about Jack. Just sending a huge hug to you.
WHAT! Oh no. Well get some new food in and see if that will help lower his sugars. I hope that you have caught it soon enough that diet and exercise will help. You have the vet you need behind you so rest easy that all that needs to be done will be. You have lots of friends to help out. Use them when need be, not until you have no other choice. Hear me?? Anyway best of luck.
Praying with you that Jack will be okay... accurate diagnosis and good treatment plan. I'm so sorry you are facing yet another crisis.

We are just going to cross our paws and fingers that this infection is just causing weird stuff and will hope that it isn't diabetes.  Think positive thoughts and then if they do find out that it is what he has - who better than a nurse to deal with treating it.  We believe you can do it!!!

FIngers/paws crossed that it is only an infection.  Don't get ahead of yourself at this point. Wait for the results first!  I know it's hard...believe me :)

I was devastated when I found out my little chi has kidney disease - but we are handling it!

Thinking pawsitive thoughts Jennifer!

Don't know much about canine diabetes, but a quick internet search reveals that it's fairly manageable.  If I remember correctly, you're a pretty organized, routine-oriented person, so you should have little difficulty with the strict dietary restrictions and any necessary injections.  But, maybe that's putting the cart before the horse.  Hopefully, it's just an aberration in the first urine tests... Will be thinking good thoughts for you all!
I hope that Jack feels better very soon!
I am so sorry to hear about Jack. I hope tomorrow brings better news.
I'm so sorry to hear this.  It seems that managing diabetes in animals is at once easier (easier to feed them precise portions) and tougher (maybe not as fine tuned of management overall) than managing it in people.

Keeping a good thought for you and Jack.  Hopefully the blood test will shed more light on things.  Gav just came off treatment for a lingering kidney infection and needed 5 weeks of antibiotics with blood and urine tests every two weeks to ensure that caught every last bit of it.  Perhaps after the infection is taken care of, things will look better.
