The Garden State

I decided today to go to one of a number of local farmer's markets. This was a small but good one. There were the most gorgeous vegetables and fruits. Purple and light green peppers. A long curved eggplant. Round zuchini. Pickles and olives. A seafood and baked goods vendor.

One of the vendor's was Mortgage Apple Cakes. A NJ woman, who is an actress, was about to lose her house to foreclosure. She started baking her special apple cake recipe. The papers picked it up and a bakery gave her some space she could use. Her house was saved and her cake business is thriving. I tasted one sample bite. Delicious.

Beautiful vegetables! the one disadvantage about living in the garden state is - we're only truly a garden state during the summer. It is so wonderful going every week to pick up really fresh veggies! Mac & Lucy also enjoy going - in addition to all the attention they get there is a woman who bakes dog treats & they always seem to finagle (sp?) a sample or two.
