Help!...  My once  "Sweet Smelling Girl"...now has the ordor of fish!...Ewwwwwww...

We'ver had a number of discussions on DK about Doodles Not have an odor...and how wonderful it is to be able to not have to bathe them often...etc.

That was true for Sasha.

Even with her white coat...I'm fortunate that she stays white and doesn't stain...her breath is fresh smelling...and her coat always looks and smells clean and fresh!

Well Not Anymore!!

Ever since I changed her food from Fromm to Orijen...Sasha's breath and coat now has a "slight smell" ...and it's not pleasant At All!

She was originally eating Fromm 4 Star and then I switched her to  Fromm Grain Free.

Then our local Pet Shop began to carry Orijen.

Since I always wanted to try Orijen... I switched her to the Adult Chicken.Turkey and Fish...and she has now finished two of the large bags.

Another change I made recently was to buy TOTW canned food...to add as a topper to the dry food she is eating.  I just add one tablesoon to her kibble.

She never ate Any canned food before this ...so might this be a reason for the Odor??

Do I need to keep her away from the TOTW or Any canned fish?

When I was feeding her the Fromm Salmon...she didn't have any  odor to her breath or coat At All.

Hmmmm...I wonder if it isn't the dry food...and it's the canned food??

Now I'm a little more confused!!  Lol...

I'm wondering if  I should go back to the Fromm...thinking that the Orijen might be causing the smell to her breath and coat.

I will have to say...the Orijen does have a "strong odor"...and I don't find that the Fromm has a strong odor to it.

Just my opinion...Not a right or wrong. (smile)

Should I stop feeding Sasha any canned food that has fish in it?  Could fish be the cause of the odor?

I will be eagerly waiting to hear responses...

Sasha and My Entire Family Thank You...Lol...

PS.. I.just wanted you to know that Sasha just had her two year check up...and all is well medically.

hooray on Sasha's 2 yr check up. My two cents is the fish in her food is to blame. not an expert here. just a suggestion - kinda like I can reak of garlic with just a taste and my husband can eat a clove and never have a problem.

Thank you so much...and I do hope the Lilly is doing well...

I have a feeling that her food is to blame too.

I'm just so thankful to be able to get advice from people who have Doodles and have gone through things like this.

I'm hoping to hear from Karen...but I know that the timing isn't good right now... the with hurricane...which is a real problem.

Thanks again...

It could also be anal gland leakage. People say it is a fishy smell, I think.
Yeah, Izzy STUNK and I couldn't figure out what it was and it was her anal glands. It has to be the worst smell imaginable....yuk!!!!

Thanks Carla...

I got a chance to check on that with the Vet...and thankfully...there is no anal gland leakage.

I'll start checking to see if it's the food.

Thanks again...and have a great day...

Thank you for the thought F.

I did get a chance to take Sasha to the Vet before we left New Jersey.

Thankfully there isn't a problem with her anal glands...but it certainly was worth looking into.

Her Vet thinks it's most likely the food.

I'll try eliminating things slowly...and see what I come up with.

On another note...I hope your electric is back on...and you and the Doodles can start recovering from Irene!!

I'm keeping you in my thoughts and prayers...

Thanks again...

It sounds like it's probably all that good fish in her food that's causing it though Riley is fed on Orijen and he smells gorgeous even when he is wet and yukky!  It would seem like too much of a coincidence since you recently changed Sasha's food.  There is an Orijen Red version that has no fish which you could switch to  Also if there is fish in the canned I would eliminate that and see if it helps, though you would have to give it at least a few weeks I think for it to eliminate completely from her system.

Hope all is good with you XXXX  Nicky & Riley, (great that Sasha passed her Vet check  too)

Thanks Nicky...

I agree that it is most likely the fish......and I have a "feeling" that it's the TOTW canned food that I started to use as a topper at the same time I switched from Fromm to Orijen.  Very Strong Smelling and of course...Sasha loves it!!  Lol...

I Never gave Sasha canned food before...although the TOTW is on the "good food" list. (smile)

I just stopped using it and will see what happens.

I will go back to adding some fresh foods...like hard boiled eggs...but...I will have to come up with some other options for a variety.  Any Ideas????

Funny thing...I only fed Sasha her dry food until she was about a year and a half...and she was Totally satisfied with it...not a picky eater at all!    Quite the opposite!!  Lol...

Once I started adding "toppers"...hard boiled eggs...fresh grilled chicken...and then the canned....she then Always wanted to have her food with the added topper.  What Doodle wouldn't??  Hmmmm...

On another note...I really do need to sit down and send you a "catch up e-mail".

With both of our children moving and then going on the cruise for two weeks...I'm still trying to get caught up with everything!!

I hope all is well with you...your Irish Cave Man and the girls...

Hugs...

Vern is going to love Sasha's new perfume :)

Don't tell Sasha that...or she will insist that I continue feeding her fish!!

Of course...I will keep an extra can of the TOTW salmon on hand...for those "special" dates with Vern!

A little dab or two behind the ears...and under the tail..just might do the trick...don't you think??  Lol...

Yes...that settles it!!  I will keep several cans of the Strongest smelling food for those intimate rolls in the mud...or...well...you know...

We shall call the new scent...O de Toilette Fish-A-Doodle!   Perfectly Doodle-Phewey!!

My only comment about the Orijen is that our girl has been eating it ofr 4.5 years and has never had an odour .Perhaps it is the canned food.

I am Very Happy to announce that Sasha Smells Sweet and Clean Again!!

I knew that I had to track down the reason for the odor that Sasha was experiencing...so...the detective work began!

I decided to eliminate the TOTW canned food (fish flavor)...which I started using as a topper to her Orijen.

It has been only a week...and I am Happily Surprised and Greatly Pleased to find that Sasha's breath lost that fishy smell...and her coat smells fresh and clean!

Tonight...I actually burried my face in the soft fur on her head and breathed deeply (smile) and it was Wonderful to smell her clean  Doodle smell!

I was So happy that I called my DH over and told him to do the same...asking him...what do you smell??

He looked up and smiled...and said...It's Gone!!  Sasha smells like herself again!!  She smells Great!  Lol...

It's so good to have our "Sweet Smelling" girl back again!

Thank you so much for all of your advice...it was greatly appreciated...
