Thank Goodness for Eye Gunk

A few of you have asked how I found Murphy's melanoma. Here is the story.

 

Every morning I clean Murphy's eyes. They are always full of eye gunk (or boogers, as Joanne says).

It is such a routine, that he will even bring me the washcloth. Because of this, I noticed a rough spot on his nose. I thought Finn had bitten or scratched him (like all the rest of us). It seemed to heal up, but I washed the scab off and it bled profusely. I thought that was quite similar to the skin cancers I have had so I took him to the vet, thinking she would totally blow me off as a neurotic mom. Well, she didn't. It was black. We gave it one week and it was no better so we did surgery.

 

So, thank goodness for eye boogers!

He brings his own washcloth???? Ned and Clancy are definitely on the lower end of the range of doodle intelligence!   Clancy never gets any and Ned disdains eating eye boogers. 

Seriously, I am so glad that you caught that spot early. I am going to check my guys over tomorrow in bright daylight.

Cooper loves her eye crusties as we call them. Whats Murphs final diagnosis? is the cancer localized? will he be ok?

Melanoma.  It is not in the lymph nodes or his lungs. We are waiting on further tests and a second opinion on the biopsy to see if we do radiation. At this point I am very optimistic.

Linda, I feel so fond of Murphy. I think he was the first big doodle I saw on DK and my boy is big too. I have followed you and Murphy and Finn for months and have grown fond of all of you. I am hoping and praying that Murphy will get a clean bill of health after treatment for his melanoma. Lots of doodlekisses for your boys from my boys and me.

Agreed, thank goodness that you caught it early. As disgusted as I was when I read that infamous discussion, I too feed Darwin his eye boogers now. LOL
