Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I'm curious as to how much you feed your doodle daily and how much you would estimate it costs to feed your doodle monthly?  Please indicate your dog's weight and activity level.  I'm trying to figure out how raw will compare to feeding Honest Kitchen in price. Right now Jake (50lbs at 10 months and very active) goes through about $90 of food every 2.5 weeks.  Of course feeding what is best for him is what I'm most concerned about, but I wouldn't mind cutting back how much I spend on his food if possible!!  Thank you in advance for sharing!!

Heather,

I'm not sure that I could acurately figure this out and that might be just as well (lol). I've been stocking up on things when they are on sale (I have an extra freezer so I can buy in bulk).  So I don't think it will be the same week to week. Also I have 4 dogs, so I am not really sure how much of the budget goes to which dog, since they don't eat the same amount. I imagine that it will probably cost a bit more than premium dry food but less than buying prepared raw food. I know for sure that i spend more money on the dogs' food than I do on my own!

Thank you!  And that's quite the size difference you've got there... how many lbs/day do you feed Molly?  And Honest Kitchen is a prepared dehydrated complete raw food with human-grade ingredients.  Jake's eating the Embark variety which is grain free with Turkey...  I know a lot of raw feeders that use this when traveling since it is hard to bring the raw meats.

Hi, we have two dogs which cost around 4 Euro  (5,8 $) per day avg (I just checked my financial records ;-)). We mainly feed BARF/Raw also buying bulk ervery two or three months. For training and games we use treats and quality dry food which is included in the 4 Euro.

Our BARF/Raw is mix of various fresh meat with veggs, oil, adds and in-between raw bones...

Dina is female Bernese Mountaindog, 3 yrs, 33 kg (73 lbs). Usually it would be 2% of her weight (660 gramm) but as she tends to overweight I give about 500 gramm in two meals, half each morning and evening. Always with a topping e.g. an apple, bit of cottage cheese, carrot or whatever is there.

Butz is male Bernes Maintaindog/Poodle mix, 10 months, 31 kg (61 lbs). He should be getting 3% of his weight but I feed him about 700 gramm in BARF. With the treats he get during the day while training or out on walks and stuff he steals whenever possible this turns out to be just about right ;-)

Hi Andrea, we are from Germany near Berlin. Thanks for your suggestion. I have joined the ukrmb group on yahoo. Alway interested in new ideas. Many thanks Daniela (parent of Dina and Butz, Jerry the cat and Pogo the bearded dragon)

I spend about $90 canadian a month on feeding Cooper at 60lb and 3 cats at 10, 12 and 14lbs. I buy it in 4.5kg bulk and portion it up and re-freeze it. This is the chicken, which is the cheapest. Occasionally we get beef, buffalo, salmon which is more expensive (but 1 cat will only eat chicken). However, Im moving to Ontario at the end of the month and will have to find a new supplier. Its hard finding somewhere to buy in bulk. Small packs of nuggets or patties are much more expensive. Maybe getting it from a butcher may be cheaper.

Andrea, where do you buy your raw? What company is it? Maybe I can find it in Sault Ste Marie. $2 a day is a good price

Kaylin, I just join a raw feeders buying collective. I still have not tried to figure out how much I spend per month but I will be able to get a better variety of meats and organs, at a much better prices than what I had been paying since we buy in bulk. I have the freezer space and the need, since I have 4 dogs to buy full cases, but other in the group who don't need that much split the cases, but still get the priceing. You might look to see if you have such groups in your area.

Hi Kaytlin,

We are in Alberta and we looked online and found a natural chicken farm. We contacted them directly and because they have a lot of chickens and backs, we get them for $1/lb. They are individually packaged per pound and frozen.

Once we bough from the butcher, and the 50lb box we got was fresh and raw. It took me 2 days to separate and freeze it all before it went bad (ugh!).

The other place we get our meat is from the small grocery store butcher for offcuts. (the big stores are harder to deal with I find). We pay $2/lb approx. from them.

Hopefully you can find a good farm to work with out there.

BTW I feed 100g raw meat for every 10lb of body weight. A 10 month old would need more.

I feed my labradoodle 500grams a day (2.5% of his ideal adult weight of 20kg). I feed mostly chicken legs and breast for variety I also add pork shoulder beef scraps but only 10-20% of the meals since they are quite pricey. For organs I give mostly chicken organs. Average costs is around US$2.50-3 per kg

p.s. i live in Bangkok, Thailand

Kimmi how old is Chewie, just wondering around what age I will have to increase my amounts lol. My International student that lives with our family is from Bangkok his name is Thanakan great kid, are you being effected by the flooding at all.

Rhonda, Chewie's turning 8 months this Wednesday.

For Raw feeding, the amount stays exactly the same, only the feeding frequency change. When they're under 6 months, you feed them 3-4 times a day. After that 2 times a day.

No, we've not been affected by the flooding YET! Hopefully, it stays that way, but we're not taking any chances and I've started building bunkers from sandbags to prevent water from entering my house and have moved our cars to higher grounds (e.g. my in-laws' condo)

Here's a picture of Chewie with our sandbags.

Chewie looks so cool.
