Heart Murmur

Hey all!

I was just wondering if any of you have any experience with heart murmurs in young puppies?

The puppy that I chose has a grade 2 heart murmur. The breeders vet says it will most likely outgrow it and it won't cause any problems. The breeders have been fantastic about talking with me about this and have been super helpful.

I know I do not have the puppy yet, but this is the one I really want...and have become attached to the idea of having him around...I am pretty upset with the possibility of him being sick. I know he could totally be fine.

It does make me nervous though...

Should I be concerned? Any tips?

Now that you've slept on it Rachel, what have you decided? Many of us do feel for you. Let us know what the vets decide and how your breeder is standing behind her health guarantee with this.

Lily had a grade 1 murmur- very quiet and only heard when she was very calm and relaxed at the vet's office.It was not detected at the breeder's vet, and my vet almost missed it, as it was extremely soft. It was an "innocent" murmur and went away at about 11 weeks. She has had her heart listened to about 3 times after that and all is still clear. The "grade" of the murmur doesn't always relate to the severity of the murmur. The grade tells how loud the murmur is, with 6 being the highest.So while a 2 sounds like less of a problem than a higher grade, it still could possibly be a severe structural defect or it may be nothing major. Like Karen said, do your research with your vet and make sure you know what you are getting into just in case it becomes a major health issue, before you have the puppy in your arms and really fall in love.
