Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I have wanted a puppy since I was a kid. First it was my mom then school and then small apartments stopped me from getting a puppy. I get married, find a bigger place and now its the wife. She is scared of dogs but doesn't mind a small dog around. After showing her countless pictures of cute lil doodles and promising her that he/she will not get bigger than 15"- 20" and 25 lbs. She has agreed to get a mini doodle.

I have made a deposit on a F1 mini that is due in Dec. The sire is a mini poodle (14" and 15 lbs) and the dam in an all American retriever ( 22" and 42lbs). I understand its hard to determine the coat and size of a F1 mini until it grows up.

How do I pick a puppy that has the "best chance" of staying mini.

I don't know but I am positive others will help you here.  What I want to comment on is, once you get this dog, if by some chance it gets to 28 lbs, I think your wife will love the dog still.  It is the bond that matters.

A great way ( the best way in my opinion)  to help your wife bond with the new puppy is go to training together.   The trainer or handler forms a very strong bond with the dog.

Good luck on your new puppy

Joanne: My wife and I were speaking about the exact same thing last night. She wants to go training with the puppy and teach him cool tricks...

That's great Raghu.  It's helps you and the dog ~~ so it is a great deal all around.   Sounds like you are already taking all the responsible steps to owning a dog by doing your research.  My wish for you is that you find all the JOYS of having a dog and that you all live together for many years as a family.

I know many others will chime in here about size.  I can not help you because I gravitate to HUGE dogs.  Honestly, I fear the little ones. HA

The best chance of getting a Goldendoodle to stay mini under 20 pounds is to look for a breeder that offers Petite Goldendoodles. I have a petite goldendoodle who is 9 months now and weighs 18 pounds. She is expected to reach 20 pounds once full grown. Google Petite Goldendoodles and I am sure you will find a breeder in your area. I have never met a mini goldendoodle under 35 pounds, but I could be wrong. As for the dogs coat, I went for the puppy with the flatest coat, more goldenretriever. My Daisy now has a long soft curl like a Sheepdog.

Good luck with your new puppy.

I have to mini goldendoodles-Chloe is 4 and 28 pounds

Myla is 3 and 19 pounds.

Parents' size is no guarantee of offsprings' size.  Our "mini", Shayna, had a 16# sire and a 42# dam.  Shayna's adult weight is 45#.  You may want to ask the breeder how big previous litters have been from this pair.  As Joanne said after the bond is established the size really doesn't matter.

I believe there is a group on DK for mini's, you should consider joining.

Good luck and welcome to DK.

I initially wanted to adopt from a shelter but came across a NGO who was raising funds by breeding their retriever with a mini poodle. Seems like our breeder is in it for the first time. I don't think they have a reference to how big their mini's grow.

We are extremely excited to get the puppy. I just hope my wife doesn't get intimidated if he grows too big...

I would be more concerned with whether or not this first time breeder is breeding health tested dogs.  Breeding your dog with no experience just to raise funds as you put it is irresponsible.
Well..she has a certified GR dam and the sire is a certified mini poodle from a close by breeder (for 20 yrs). This experienced breeder is helping them out... They are raising funds for a good cause... so I am ok taking this chance :)
certified as in health tested?
Yes, hip, elbow, eyes.. etc etc. They apparently also have a CKC certificate. From what I have read, CKC is not a big deals as opposed to a AKC. Either ways, all we need is a well behaved and healthy son/daughter  :)

with an F1 its very difficult to predict size - they pup could be like mom, or dad, or anything in between. Id join the mini doodle group and ask advice there, they may be able to help you more

i prefer the big dogs too, small ones are to yappy and nippy for my liking
