I have always wanted to learn to knit. I took it up a couple years ago and tried to learn to make wash clothes as a start. It turned out ok, but I kept making mistakes and getting frustrated. I learned that I was using needles that were way to small for beginners among other things. I ended up getting frustrated and losing interest, mainly because I couldn't think of anything that motivated me to make. I already have too many scarves, I'm afraid I couldn't make anything nice enough to give as a gift, and sweaters and socks are too complicated for a beginner.

A friend recently sent me a link about a campaign in New Zealand to knit sweaters for penguins to protect them from an oil spill. http://jezebel.com/5851711/the-worldwide-campaign-to-knit-sweaters-...  - how cute are they??  Maybe I could give this a try...

I was also thinking of knitting a sweater for Sophie, and so I'm wondering if there are any knitters on DK who have an easy pattern for a doggie sweater... how fun would it be to establish a DK knitting club?? (told you, I'm a big nerd).

I am not a knitter, but I am a crocheter.  I wonder if they have a pattern to crochet penguin sweaters? :)
I've read (I think on the same site where you posted the link from) that they now have enough sweaters for the affected penguins. I suppose it couldn't hurt to knit a few to have on hand for the next oil spill. :)
I think that Sophie is in luck because if you read the top post in the comment area they no longer want  penguin sweaters! :(  Apparently they are "full up".  I don't knit but I have purchased 2 hand knit sweaters for Tara from Canada! :) I just love them and so does she!

I think this is a fab site, even if you don't buy the kits watch the videos.  I bought some of these last year and made some cool scarves and hats for the girls.

I started up knitting last winter and love it! Its great for the winter months when its freezing and there is nothing better to do but watch TV and knit! LOL I use this site for free patterns http://www.lionbrand.com/content-knittingPatternIndex.html.  Ive knit 2 doggy sweaters from it!

Well I'm glad all those penguins have enough sweaters for the winter lol. I might give it a try for Sophie- she's half of Winston's size so it will be easier... I'd start with the cat but doubt she'd wear it lol.

@Chelsea, you are so right about the winter months. Thing is, it will likely be spring by the time I finish it LOL. I'm going to check out some of those free patterns, thanks for the link.

Hey, never underestimate a cat! LOL!

very stylish!
Thank you! Did you notice the bling? LOL!
I don't knit but I crochet... I'm going to go look for patterns now. :-)
Oh man, I used to knit. The needles and yarn are stored away for now while Pixel's young (WOO-HOO! STRING! *whirlwind claws of death*) Check out http://www.ravelry.com/ for a bazillion patterns searchable by pretty much any attribute you can think of. I miss knitting!
I am a big crocheter. I have patterns for sweaters. I actually paid for almost  all my christmas gift one year!!!
