Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I haven't seen this posted before and was explaining it a neighbor and thought I would pass on this tip that my breeder gave me. With our Doodles being soooo cute and never wanting our dogs to get lost or stolen....these are some good tips to ensure if that if that is the case, they will be returned to us.
1) Do not list your Dogs name on the collar - I know if someone called Meggie by reading the collar, she would be their friend for life. But if they were calling my name - she would be confused! List your name on the collar.
2) Have need medications daily on the collar, nobody wants a sick dog or one that will cost the money!
3) Last but not least put reward if found

Make sure you put your cel phone number on the tag. Remember you won't be home if you are out looking for your dog.
I don't want to be the bad guy but either of my dogs wouldn't care if you called them by name - got a snack or treat - might take a minute but they will warm right up to you. Need meds daily - well if an honest person found my dog they'd be calling the phone number anyway but a person that would actually steal a dog - they aren't going to take the time to look at the tag first, second since they are bad people so they wouldn't care if the dog needed meds or not so not sure that would help. The reward if found might help but then you better be prepared to pay it. If a dog is stolen - an ALD runs about $2,500.00. Seems the best thing you can do is not let your dog be in a position to get lost or be stolen; no running off lease, no leaving in the car or yard un-attended. The best solution - micro-chip.
Jane, I don't think anyone intentionally puts their dog in a position to be lost or stolen, lets face it, stuff happens. What if something happened to you while your dogs were with you? They might get scared, run off, or get stolen. It is a good idea to be prepared and I know I for one would pay 3 times the cost of my dogs to have them returned to me.
My tags have #1 and #2. #3 is also a very good suggestion.
Jane,
I have a dog who runs! Runs and runs. First for fun, then from FEAR! I agree NEVER put a dog in this situation. But nothing in life is IDEAL, unfortunately. I have extensively trained her. EXTENSIVE. I have pad locks on the gates. We never leave the house with her alone unless both of us are in the car. One to guard the door and one of us to grab the leash. Many times she is double leashed and collared. A harness and a prong collar.
Still, it happens. This big heavy girl will PUSH so hard, she can and has broken out. When she spooks--She has a lot of power in her fear.
Less now than when she was a fearful puppy, but just last month with a new car, the electric doors opened and she pushed me down and off she went. Thank Gawd, she escaped into the back of a store--a MEAT store. The scent got her attention and she stopped. We cornered and grabbed her.
I have tags and chips and neighbors and a trainer.... still it happens.
P.S. No one could steal her. She would bite the hell out of them. They don't want her. LOL But still, I want her back and safe with me.
These are great tips. I just got new tags and listed their names and my HOME number. Darn it!! Thanks for the tips!
Jane - I agree but as you know there are some people out there that may or may not have the same morals as we do! I get told all the time how cute my dog is and if someone wanted to steal a dog or came across her, she's a cute one! SO I want to do everything I can do to make sure IF anything happens, we would get her back - and yes, I would be prepared to pay she is a part of my family. My dog's favorite part of the day is when she can go on errands with me and ride in the car, I'm not going to deprive her of that - and I lock up.
I wanted to share what we have on all our dogs tags.
I AM VERY LOVED
(then all our phone contacts)
Our hope is that if they should ever get seperated from us, for any reason, someone would read the tag and know that their being in their presence was purely accidental and not out of neglect.
I like this Carole
Time for new tags for Christmas I guess!!!
