This is the only bone our doodle gets!
The marrow or shin bones are my boys favorites! I buy them at the Publix in the frozen section - for once something that they like, are good for them and are CHEAP! I used to boil them for 40 minutes but our trainer said that giving them right from the freezer is fine. So sometimes I boil and sometimes I don't. My guys also love bully stick, braided ones - we buy in bulk from internet - Redbarn brand. Beef raised and processed in the U.S. - organic, no additives but our last mega order was $$$$$.
Where are they in the frozen section? I looked and never found them today. No one seems to know. I would think here in Atlanta we would have them like you do
Thank you for asking, Jo. I am completely confused about the marrow bones and where to find them!
I've gotten them from Publix in Atlanta (a Vinnings location). High end pet stores often have raw bones in a freezer.
Oliver is a big time chewer as a puppy and as a 18 month old. I bought a $70 bag of elk antlers... he loves them and they are long lasting. Ollie is a agressive chewer and can chew thru anything in seconds flat. I am always on the look-out for something long lasting and fun. I also get the marrow bones from the butcher but for some reason he does not have much interest in them, Sasha on the other hand goes nuts over them. Both also love the hooves, I only purchase them from if they are from the US. They are long lasting as well and about a dollar each. Of course they love the braided bully sticks but they stink and I only give them to chew when they are outside. I buy the bully sticks and put them in the freezer it seems to cut down on the smell.
We have had discussions on marrow bones. I boil mine for 10 minutes. I froze some of the last cooked batch and defrosted them recently. The dogs enjoy them.
I have never given a marrow bone to Parker as I am not sure what the rules and opinions are about bones (cooked and uncooked) with regards to splintering and choking hazards...I have given Parker an antler (no splintering, no smell, no sticky mess) and he LOVES it! I take it away at night and in the morning he goes looking for it! I have just gotten two more for his Christmas stocking since his old one is getting kinda small (don't want him swallowing the last little piece whole!)
Katie, I am in exactly the same spot. I don't know what bones to give or where I am supposed to find the safe ones. I don't want to give them anything with fat and meat on it because that would get gross in the house. I have suck with the antlers. The boys love them but they are more expensive than the bones. I just don't know.
I give Bindi beef marrow bones. I just buy the beef soup bones at the supermarket & freeze them. I give them to Bindi uncooked. sometimes I give them to her frozen but most times I defrost them & then I give them to her. I have read & have been told by many people that giving dogs raw bones is better than cooked because they don't splinter, so we have always given her raw bones.
The deer antlers are also good for a doog that chews. Bindi & her cousin Mickey love them along with bison hoofs!
