Tofu is on a high protein diet and I have heard mix reviews on this diet for dogs.

"High Protein" is a subjective term. What diet or food specifically are you feeding?

When you say you have heard "mixed reviews", to what are you refering? Actual dog food nutrition or analysis websites, or chat room forums and advice from trainers, groomers, etc? There have been some erroneous rumors floating around about higher protein being bad for dogs.

Dogs are designed to eat protein as their main source of calories; the only other sources of energy are carbohydrates and fat.

40% protein is not too much for a normal healthy dog. Even at that level, more than half of the metabolic energy in a dog's diet would have to be provided by plant foods and starches.

Very few commercial dog foods have 40% protein, and I do not know of any that are higher. I suspect you may be talking about Orijen, which is the finest quality kibble available, IMO.  If so, do not be mislead by the 70% wording on the label. The actual nutritional analysis puts the percentage of calories from protein at 38-40%. Most other foods range below 32%. So unless you are feeding your dog plain meat exclusively, it's doubtful that his diet is too high in protein.

I certainly wouldnt feed my dog tofu! I eat the tofu, my dog eats kibble and raw meat.

I feed a high protein diet (between 33 and 40% protein) as this is similar to the protein amounts in raw meat, which dogs (wolves) evolved to eat. Feeding raw meat isnt always practical, and it makes some people squeamish, so a high protein kibble is a good compromise. However, if your dog lays around all day and gets barely any exercise (ie a couch potato) then some people say a high protein diet isnt needed. I say feed a high protein diet, just less of it. That way they arent getting all the fillers (ie waste) they just poop out

I like Canidae grain gree, Orijen, Go Endurance, Performatrin grain free. The food group has a recommended list

I feed Orijen and won't change as it's definitely a very good food and Riley is thriving on it. I do add a little cooked minced beef sometimes or a few cooked green beans but that's it.  Treats are turkey hearts and antlers.
