Hi all,

My 9 month old has persistent eye gunk/tears that stain his face.  Any suggestions for products/upkeep?

I clean with sensitive contact lens solution on a soft rag.

This type of staining usually means food allergies. You can soothe the eyes by using a cooled solution of weak black tea. The 2 most common causes IMO are chicken and beef. Two over used proteins. Of course it could be something else altogether, but that is a place to start. Have you ruled out entropion?

Teething at this age will cause this.

A pup this age should be finished teething. My dogs have all adult teeth by 5 or 6 months.

One of my dogs has what we call "eye buggers" every morning, but they do not stain his face.  I clean his eyes every morning with a tissue and he is very accustomed to that.  The other dog has rather crusty eye gunk sometimes and I also clean with a tissue.  Just part of the daily grooming for my dogs.  Get your pup used to having his eyes, ears, teeth and feet handled regularly.  The staining?  I don't know what could cause that.

I think a lot of people use Angel Eyes?  I don't know.  The red Doods don't seem to have an issue with staining, but they do have a bit gunk.  Not a lot, though.  I just pick it off of them and move on...  ;-)

But both of my doodles have A LOT of eye gunk and always have.  Their eyes are healthy, they just have a lot of "gwid" we call it.  They don't really tear much tho.  I clean their eyes pretty much every day so their hair don't get gunked up.  Maybe it's just a doodle thing :)
