I don't know how the rest of you feel about him but I have lost all respect for the man. How on earth could a reasonable, kind human being ever put their beloved pet on the top of a car in a crate. It makes me sick to think what this poor animal suffered. IMO he should ride on the top of a car at 60 (with a windshield - nice try Mitt) and see how he likes it.Disgusted!

You make some good points about mistakes we made in the past and lessons that can HOPEFULLY be learned from them. I thought the same thing when I saw that it happened in 1983. It does appear though that he missed the lesson on how to properly care for his animal companions since as you pointed out there appears to be no remorse on his part about that incident.
Sorry, I have to chime in here. First, as far as presidential candidates, I don't know enough about any of the candidates, so I am treating this like he's an ordinary person.
I believe we have all done something in our past that we aren't so proud of and would do differently now that we are better educated. With that said, while the dog was obviously in distress, the dog was not physically harmed. Why is this any different then the people that let their dogs ride in a crate (and some not in a crate) in the back of their pickup? I see it all the time. Does this make them bad people? Not in my opinion. I did not see the interview, so don't know his response when questioned about it. The dog was not harmed, so he made light of it, from what I understand. I have had dogs crap all over in nervousness just going to the vet. Does this make me a bad person for continuing to take them to a vet? IF the dog fell off and died, I would of course be more upset, but the dog was not physically harmed.
I have less respect for Gingrich for bringing this kind of crap up. I hate the mud slinging. Is this dog issue really a determining factor for chosing a president? In my eyes it doesn't make Newt look good at all. Those who have to trash other people to make themselves look better are not the kind of people I want running my country.
I am now stepping off my soapbox.
Speaking of Mitt:
Tee hee. I love his thoughts on Winona Ryder ;-)
This was not really partisan as this site has one for each candidate, but his is MY FAVORITE!!! The one for Herman Cain is pretty good too.
Hilarious! The Obama one is HYSTERICAL.

Thanks I needed a good laugh!
muwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
I have got to send the Ron Paul to my brother OMD!
Not voting for Mitt Romney or anything (and I'm with you who have no clue at this point), but wanted to throw this thought out there. My dad is definitely the type of person who would do this, and I KNOW my dad isn't a bad person. He's just a bad pet owner.
Obviously there is no requirement to be a responsible pet owner in order to be president, and I think that focusing on what he will do or not do, realistically, politically for the country is much more important when it comes to voting. It may be kind of harsh, but this has very little bearing on his ability to be the president. I highly doubt he is the first president/politician to be unwise/cruel to their pet, he's just one of the recent ones we've heard about. Obviously he's not going to do something like that again, because he's seen how it's hurt his popularity.
It shows me that his not apologizing for what he did or saying it was wrong means he isn't very good at being sorry/contrite, and that he's an uninformed/ignorant pet owner. I'm sure that is true of many candidates, and there are much worse character flaws in both him and the other candidates.
But yes, the thought is absolutely terrible and horrifying. I am baffled by some people's stupidity when it comes to animals. And cruelty. Obviously they shouldn't be pet owners.
Character means a lot to me, I liked Clinton when his "character" flaws came in to play...I still think he was a decent President but not a decent man and would never have voted for him again.
The dog was obviously in distress since it had diarrhea all over the car and Romney pull over to a gas station to hose down the car!

My thought is in 1983 I would not have done this, I also would not have a dog in a crate in the back of a pick up but I AM NOT RUNNING for President.
My standards for Presidential material are never met however, I am always left voting for the least of the worst, I want a someone who thinks all beings should be treated with kindness ( and from his response he still thinks he did nothing wrong)!
