Darwin has a gash on his leg, ADVICE NEEDED...

So I just found a gash on Darwin's leg. It looks like a "v", and each side of the "v" is about 1" long. It's from earlier today so the blood has clotted a little bit, but he's been licking it and blood is still coming away when I wipe it with a wet paper towel. I am going to take him to the vet tomorrow morning, but for tonight what should I do? 

Rinse it with Hydrogen Peroxide? Is there some kind of ointment I should put on it? Do any of you have an idea of how I can keep him from licking it, because we don't have a cone. It's on his upper hind leg.

Another update. We did not take Darwin to the vet because it's fairly small and was looking good. What we did this morning is clean the wound, uncovered it and just left it. We have put the cone on him while we are not supervising to assure that he doesn't lick it at all. It's looking pretty superficial at this point.

Sounds like you took very good care of your patient. Good job. This will give you a little more insight into what to "wait and watch" and what to take to the vet ASAP. You did well by asking for advice and then following your instincts. Good practice for having children! Wink wink.

I was gone all day yesterday. Just want to say that I'm glad Darwin is doing better. Did you cut the hair around the wound? No one seemed to mention this. It will help you see how the healing is going and keep the antibiotic cream on the cut instead of just on the hair.
