Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
It is thundering and lightening pretty bad here today. As I was driving I found a stray dog. I used one of my extra loop leashes that don't require a collar to catch. He was walking out in front of cars.. When I pulled the car over and opened the door, he hopped right in and gave me a look like it is about time.
He is a pit bull/ retriever type dog and I didn't realize he was a pit bull or I may have been more cautious.. All I could see was this adorable cute young male dog running around in the rain. He had no collar, I brought him to my vet and he didn't have a microchip either.
Let me tell you this dog is a character. He got my heart in one minute. He was well behaved, He sat and looked at me as I explained the story to other people of him. When the vets came out to see him, he promptly rolled on his back and waited to be pet.
The vet said they could not keep him but I think when my eyes popped out of my head they agreed to keep him for the weekend and allow me time to try to find his owner.
I made up over 100 flyers and put them in the mail boxes of two neighborhoods. I called the local rescue places and they told me that they could not take him either. Apparently Pit Bull mixes is mostly all the shelters have around here and they are maxed out.
I can not turn my back on him and I can't bring a huge in tact pit bull mix dog into my house, Jack will have a fit.. or get eaten because he will pick a fight.
I have put it on my facebook, handed out flyers. Do you have any other ideas that I can do. I have until Monday till they turn him over...
I hate people who are irresponsible with their dog.. He obviously was cared for had some training, but I was told he has often been found running loose.. I wonder if I did him a disservice by picking him up and he would have found his own way home.
Any ideas who I can call? I will not allow him to go into a kill shelter.

how about a post on craigslist, kijiji, meetup dog groups etc? Call all the vets in town...
if he is often found running loose maybe he needs a new owner...
I know I am going to show my ignorance here but how do I post on Craigs list? It stinks that it is the weekend because he is going to sit in the Vets all weekend. I am going to visit him tomorrow and walk him without Jack of course.
I fear that his owners might not be so bright considering he has a history of running loose, he is not neutered, has no collar etc.
I am going to go hand out more flyers I guess, I am stuffing them in people's mailboxes which I know is illegal but it is pouring here...
The local rescue groups are not interested him him, at least the ones I called, they just have too many.. They told me I can place an ad in the paper for free but they said especially with pit mixes to be very careful because a lot of people will say it is there dog and take them and do God knows what with them, fighting etc.. Oh Lord
PLEASE DO NOT POST HIM ON CRAIG'S LIST! IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO POST ANY DOG ON CRAIG'S LIST, KIJIJI, ETC., BUT FOR A PITBULL, IT IS ALMOST INSURING THAT HE WILL BE IN DANGER.
People looking for dogs to bait pitbulls use CL and similar sources to obtain dogs. Also people who acquire dogs for little money and sell them to research labs. Unless you are prepared to carefully screen adopters (including obtaining and verifying a lot of personal information, including vet references), do a home visit, and ask more than $100 adoption fee, CL and similar listings are a very bad way to rehome a dog.
I posted two links below for pit rescue groups. I hope they can help.
What about the Pitt bull rescues?
I have no ideas for help, but you are so amazing. The way you love dogs. I agree, unfortunately, there is no way you should take this dog into your home. You don't know enough about it. I would hate for anything to happen to Jack. Good luck & keep us posted.
Jennifer, You are a good person :) I would try a rescue. Good luck!!!
You did an amazing thing Jennifer! I'm really impressed with you. I really hope you find the owners! It sounds like you are doing all the right things. Maybe there is a rescue group who will take him in?
What a good deed.
Here's a link to Craig's list and you can pick your area.

Try calling police departments etc. I'd call the police if one of mine were missing.
Yippie Yippie Yay!!!! One of my flyers worked!!!!! Horray, I am crying.. The owners found my flyer.. Yay... They said they left him outside today (idiots with Tornado warnings) .. They had him outside and the thunderstorm spooked him and he busted through the fence.
The vet is closed till the morning but they will go pick him up tomorrow.. Hip Hip Horray!! His name is Chocolate...
Thanks for the info.. I spent all day on this and I am most thrilled that it has a good outcome!!!! If feels good to make a difference... Yay
Jennifer, YOU ROCK!
What a relief! Thanks for helping him find his way home!
