Amante and I have been practicing for our CGC certificate. Our test day comes and Amante does fantastic almost perfect!!!! Only one issue was during the separation exercise, he wined a little. The lady who conducted the class was surprised by this, he was usually fine during this exercise. They decided to pass him. A group of the other pet owners were all telling Amante he was a Mamma's boy. Mamma's boy!!! I had hurt feelings. I know that Amante is attached, but I didn't like the way they were saying it. I know Amante sensed my frustration and this may be silly, but I think that he understood I was not happy. I think I should mention that Amante and I never really felt welcome in this group. He is a "mutt" and they are purebreds!! In the beginning , I had doubts that he might not pass. He was easily startled and would hide behind me. Comments were made that he would never pass. I knew he could do it and we practiced. I want to write it off as them just being jealous. I wish that I would of spoke up and just tell them off.
My question Should I be concerned? Should my feelings be hurt?

Great job with Amante! I would take it as a compliment that he is a "momma's boy." I personally love my momma's boy! However, it sounds like this comment would maybe not bother you if that was all there was to it. It sounds like there were already some other comments made that were really what hurt your feelings. I would try not to let it bother me. If they are "snobby" about their "breed" of dog, then they wouldn't be the type of people you should allow to hurt your feelings in the first place. Shake it off and enjoy your doodle!
congratulations! Ignore them. You can't change other people but you can change how you react to them. Just don't care what they think. He Passed!!! WooHoo!
Clancy did some whining also and they passed him. While my dh was 'hiding' around the corner, Clancy spotted me across the field. They gave him the 'rescue dog benefit' but actually he probably would have whined seeing either of us across the field. Some dogs are just more attached to their owners if they can see them, and who cares. Amante is a good boy!!!!
It's not about your feelings but whether the evaluator is following the guidelines. If you read them thoroughly and feel it was wrong for you to be passed on, you could contact the evaluator and or the AKC. I always recommend that handlers suck on Altoid type mints during a test as it can mask any nervousness on your breath. The dog will pick up on that. Good luck on the next test.
PS...oops sorry, I originally read your post as if he had been past by. Don't let your feelings enter it. He's a great dog and that's what matters. :)
Congratulations on passing the CGC. Don't let their jealousy spoil your moment. If Amante were a pure-bred they would probably say he's loyal, devoted and obedient. I'll take a momma's boy any day. I love when he spots me across the field and comes running, full speed. At the last minute he leaps for me to catch him. Since he weighs 80 lbs. that is not going to happen.
It's so unfortunate that you were in a group of people like that! In all of our classes, we've always cheered each other on and besides training, we all had a lot of laughs together. We still get together! Jack's best buddies were two Newfoundlands! How they have outgrown him! Congratulations on you CGC! You should be so proud!! We are working toward ours now and the separation exercise is our only issue too. We'll get there! And I love my Mamma's boy!
I have found that a lot of purebred owners treat their dogs like dogs. Doodle owners treat their dogs like members of the family. You are the one that said you never felt welcomed in that group, I am sure Amante picked up on the same feelings, of not being wanted, so he was not happy when he was left alone without the one person in the group that he knew loved him and wanted him. YOU!!! Don't worry about it and don't let their comments both you. He passed Yippy!!
