I had already read this in the magazine. I think the most interesting part is "the small genetic tool kit" part. What look to us like huge differences result from very slight genetic differences.
That was fascinating. I never thought of dachshunds as having a form of dwarfism but now I wonder why I didn't. And to think man's best friend may prove to be more so in helping to solve some human disease puzzles.

Great article. Reminds me of a tv documentary program I watched with DH and MIL about a month or so ago. It started off talking about humans domesticating wolves and went into selective breeding to create different breeds. It ended with a breeder talking about breeding her already inbred favourite papillon back to its grandfather to create the perfect dog. It was an interesting program but not long enough
The main shock was when my MIL totally mis-understood the program. The beginning included 2 people describing how they think wolves became domesticated - one thought humans domesticated dogs, selectively breeding the calmest friendliest ones, the other thought the wolves domesticated themselves, choosing to be near humans because of their food wastage. My MIL interpreted this to mean they were debating on whether dogs are descended from wolves or not and stated that she didnt believe they were! I gently explained to her that science and DNA has proven that they are
