So I know floppy eared dogs are more prone to ear infections (yeast).  My little guy got his first one and he's only 14 weeks.  He's a curly F1B and his ears are furry.  We got the meds and the cleaner so hopefully he'll be good to go in 7 days or so.

A few questions...

*Anyone experienced this from a young pup?

*Does anyone have their dog's ears plucked of hair by the groomer?  Vet said may be necessary if infections continue.  We will start cleaning regularly once the infection is gone so hopefully that will help.  We've given Wrigley a few baths and I'm thinking his ears got infected from the moisture.  I didn't realize that would be an issue :-(

Any tips?

Racey got an ear infection right after we first got her as well. It's pretty common.

-we pluck Racey's ear hair all the time. Basically whenever we brush her. Did the vet show you how to do it?

-we don't get Racey's head wet when she gets a bath. Otherwise she'll get an ear infection everytime she gets a bath.

-we clean Racey's ears every time we take her swimming. She hates the ear wash, but if we don't do it, she gets an ear infection.

-Racey's ears are pretty high maintenance, but I think that's common with furry ears. Once you get used to it, it's not a big deal.

I try to clean Abby's ears at least once a week, if not twice. I usually use a baby/puppy wipe and clean out the wax. If it is bad or she has just had a bath, I use the cleaning solution. My trainer said it is good to do this for health reasons, but also to have her get use to people playing with her ears (in case a small child or someone grabs them, she is not startled or wants to nip).

When I took her to get groomed 2 weeks ago (her very first grooming / 6 months old), the groomer did pluck her ear hair. I will say I have noticed less waxy build up since the hair was removed and am cleaning them less often.

My mom has a springer spaniel who had ear infections as a pup and still gets them from time to time. It is hard with floppy ear dogs. Someone had recommended to me pinning Abby's ears back with a clip after baths to make sure the moisture dries inside, but as you can imagine, she doesn't like something holding her ears back.

Good luck. Hope your pup feels better soon.

Trav had one ear infection as a puppy (he's 2 yrs. now) and had his ears plucked for the first time a few days ago.  He had really thick hair in his ears, and the vet tech put some numbing substance in his ears before plucking.  He shook his head for a few hours after that, but is fine now.  He wasn't having a problem--this was just a regular checkup.  I've always been careful when bathing him not to get water in his ears...but didn't clean his ears as regularly as I should have.  You're aware of the ear situation with Wrigley now, and should be able to do just fine with his ear maintenance!

Our Maxwell got his ear infection around 3-4 months. It smelled awful! Since then, we get the hair pulled monthly (if needed) and put cotton balls in his ears when we bathe him. We also bought ear cleaner and use it about once a week, since he tends to have very waxy ears. He hasn't had another infection

Hope this helps!

I  just bought some Foaming Face Wash by Growl and Meow. It's a foam wash. You just dampen the dog's face/head with a wet rag and them slather on a bit of the wash, instead of rinsing you wipe it off with the damp rag. I've only used it once and it works great! You could try this instead of getting his head wet.

What kind of ear wash are you using? My 18week old Baylie is being treated for her 2nd yeast infection. The vet initially said they prefer to not pluck the ears, but since Baylie is so prone to infections, she's now recommending pulling the hair. The vet told me to avoid putting liquid washes in her ears, as that can sometimes cause infections if the moisture remains in the ear canal. She told me to make a solution of 10%apple cider vinegar/water and apply to a cotton ball and clean as far as I can reach with my finger.

If you have used a liquid wash and it is helping, I'm interested in trying it. What do you recommend?
I use Virbac Epi- Otic. I got it at the vet's office, but you can get it at pet stores too. It is an ear wash with a drying solution.

Thanks, I'm going to get some right away.

Someone mentioned Costco carrying this at the Pharmacy too.

BTW I was checking to see if you were in Canada as there is a different name of the ear wash. I love the needlefelted Baylie. How cute!!!
