Hi All,

Yankee Doodle and family visited the Paseo Vista Dog Park in Chandler AZ.  Ever since our visit he has come down with diarrhea.  We have not given him anything but his normal kibbles.  We don't want to rush to vet.  Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks, Cindy

The visit to the Dog Park makes me wonder if he picked up something--or ate something icky.  But Chervil sometimes just goes through "runny" periods.  I feed white rice (cooked in chicken broth), boiled chicken, with a spoonful of strained pumpkin (not sweetened pie filling, just straight pumpkin) until her stools start firming up, then gradually change back to kibble.  Usually takes only a couple of days on rice and chicken.  Good luck!

Yes, I would try the rice with chicken first as well. No treats. If the stool does not get better within a couple of days (or gets worse in the meantime), the vet will need to do a stool test to make sure there is no giardia. Make sure Yankee is drinking water to prevent dehydration. Some dog parks are more dirty than another ones, so a sensitive dog might pick up something there. Good luck and keep us posted.

you could also try some yogurt-get plain non-fat with L. acidophilus, B. bifidus, and L. casei. Those bacterias can help the digestive tract as well. We give Racey 1/2 cup per day when she is having tummy issues and she is 32 lbs.

I agree with what others have said; however, how long ago was your trip?  If it was a few days ago and he is still having the diarrhea, I would take him in. The risk of dehydration would concern me.

The only thing I would add to this excellent advice is to give 2/3 rice and 1/3 chicken in the mixture. I would not give the yogurt until the diarrhea stops, just in case it causes an additional problem, but you can get probiotic bacteria in powder form from the vet or from a health food store.

dog park i go to, or did go to, has nasty water containers for the dogs to drink from.  I think any dog, especially one with a sensitive digestive system like my ruby's, would have tummy troubles after.  Did you get into any nasty water?

Cooper sometimes gets diarrhea for no reason. if it doesnt clear up in a few days, then id go to the vet - Yankee may have picked up something from water

Of course I am the over reactor here..I just read on our fan page club that a put died of lepto....I would be careful and watch closely! Honestly, I would bring my dog in, but when it comes to Jack I just do t take any chances ever.

Thank you for all your replies.  I don't think it was the water because we always bring our own.  I started the rice two hours ago.  I will add the chicken with dinner.  If it goes on past Tuesday I will call my vet.  He has always seemed to have a sensitive system.  Since I posted we have not had any episodes.  Thankfully he liked the rice and is drinking.  Will keep you posted.... ;)

Both my girls got giardia from drinking water at a park in South Florida. The water of the fountain flows over into a box filled with sand. That sand was constantly wet with big puddles and the water was stagnant. I would suggest if you don't notice improvement, you get him to the vet and have him tested.

I am sending a wish for a quick recovery.

I would get his stool sample checked, could be Giardia.  Hope he is feeling better soon!
