Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi Everyone-

My family and I are looking into getting an F1b goldendoodle and wanted to inquire about people's experiences with these dogs and shedding ?!?! Please let us know.

Many Thanks

Yana

I believe there is a higher chance of them not shedding compared to an F1, but there are no guarentees. A multi-gen is less likely to shed, but again, no guarentees. Your best bet for non-shedding is an Australian Labradoodle (not American labrsdoodle), but there is still not a 100% guarentee

Non-shedding also means matting and lots of grooming!

I have experience with f1b. The odds of shedding is very low.
Keep in mind though, No Shedding but lots of grooming. Be prepared to have the dog groomed daily in your own care, and by a professional groomer every 4-6 weeks! That's a promise.
I love my dog but I will say a Dyson Vacuum is a lot less expensive and the vacuuming less work than the grooming

Thank you everyone---it seems that the F1b is low shedding risk but we are trying to find, if possible, a non shedding dog. We adore the goldendoodle and therefore are trying to find this in this breed.

Do an internet search: non- shedding dog breeds. You will find a list. If it is Looks, almost all of these dogs, given a certain haircut ( again a grooming issue) can look like a Goldendoodle. For example- a standard poodle, with a long hair, groomed hairstyle, may look like a doodle.
Something else comes to mind.
Awhile back we compared pictures of poodles and pictures of doodles. Many of us got it wrong ;)

Hi Roberta-

Where did you get Bailey :)

Thank you for your comment. Would you say it is moderately easy to care for Bailey's fur? Do you brush her at home? How does she tolerate the brushing. Our previous dog (Wheaton Terrier) hated all things related to grooming so we had a very hard time with brushing.

There are NO guarantees for a non-shedding poodle mix. None. I appauld you for doing your research before you make a decision. Too many do not and families and dogs end up with a lot of heartache. Again, there ate just NO guarentees when you have a mix.

Thank you so much Joanne- it is so difficult because doodles are absolutely adorable adorable dogs. Spud is just precious..where did you get him?

We previously had a Wheaton Terrier who did not shed at all so we are looking for the same with respect to shedding. However, it is tough to beat the intelligence and loyalty that comes with a goldendoodle. I know poodles do not shed but I do not think they have the same lovable demeanor as a doodle but I could be mistaken.

The temperament of a doodle comes from both parents, not just the retriever. In an F1B, you have three purebred poodles as grandparents, so if the dog has a loving temperament, there's a good chance that his poodle grandparents did, too.

Every dog is different. There is no guarantee that a doodle will get his temperament from one parent or the other. I hear people say "Doodles are the perfect combination of the friendly personality of the retriever with he non-shedding coat of the poodle." What if the puppy gets the temperament of the poodle and the shedding coat of the retriever? It happens. Genetics are a crap shoot.

I've lived with many poodles in my life, and I can assure you that they were extremely affectionate and loving dogs, and much more "people focused" than most retrievers I've met. But the temperament of the parents is everything. One poodle is not like another, any more than one doodle is like another. This is where you have to do your research, and if at all possible, meet the parents. Have you ever spent time with a well-bred standard poodle? If not, try it, you might be very surprised.

Poodles are also ranked #2 in intelligence of all all dog breeds. Goldens are at #4 and Labs are at #7.

I think it is a mistake to group together all members of a breed as having the same personality---I agree with all the answers you have been given here--each dog is different and doing your research ahead of time is great--but the biggest thing to remember is that there are no guarantees and anyone who PROMISES that their pup will not shed or will be the most loveable pup is not being honest--good dogs are a result of good training!

I do know a person with two poodles who are absolutely devoted to her. My three doodles all have different personalities and coats, but are all loveable!

Just a thought ~

Since you are in the process of looking for a goldendoodle, have you considered adopting?  I was just noticing how many beautiful dogs (still quite young) are in need of a forever home on the main page of the Doodle Kisses website (like Wally a goldendoodle in Denver Co.).  And there are so many pros to adopting - many of them are already trained and you do not have to go through the puppy stage and they get a wonderful home.

Hi Yana, I just wrote a blog about Doodles that you might want to read. I have a F!B Labradoodle that does not shed a hair, but she mats and mats and mats and grooming does get expensive, unless you can do it yourself. All dogs come with their own personality and there is no guarantee with a mixed breed that they will not shed. Good luck in your search.
