Please forgive me for posting here. I have my DIL here to help me and she feels more then my numb finger tips do.. Sophie is getting her first body grooming Thursday and we are trying to get these mats out. I bought a conditioner and detangler and a detangler comb. Sophie is 10 months and going through the coat change. Would bathing her and conditioning her real good help getting them out? I feel really stupid right now and like I am a bad doodle mother.. I brush her 2 times a week but must not be doing it right. If we can't get her unmatted I am canceling her apt till we get th out. I don't want her shaved short. :( thanks for any suggestions...

Well, my fears were right. I now own a lamb.. I'm going to try and post a pic.Shocked at how skinny she is. I was told her puppy fur shed and thats what matted. She assured me 6/8 weeks and she will be fluffy again.

As much as you may not like her shaved down, I have to say I have seen a whole lot worse!   I've seen some taken down so far they were just pink.  Your little darling is still adorable!   This is probably the best thing that could have happened.  You will now be able to get your new tools and learn to keep her mat free as she grows out.  A lot of what was cut off as they said was her puppy coat and it was a lot straighter than what her new coat will probably be.  As she starts to grow out pay particular attention to the collar area, behind and under her ears, her belly, and her toes.  Those are the areas that like to mat the most.

toes?  what does that mean?  Where, like between the pads?  Oh my, I didn't know this!

Tops of the toes and between the toes themselves, too. That's one reason many people shave their poodles' feet, the fur there mats and it's hard to keep their feet combed out. It was the only place my poodles were ever shaved. But I think it only gets bad on dogs with very thick, woolly coats.

Ned does not mat on his feet and has the thick poodle coat, so it isn't just the poodle coat but some other annoying thing.

awwww... she looks so cute! I'm sure she is really soft.

Sophie looks adorable and life will be much easier---for a while : )

She's cute! It will grow back quickly
