So about 5 weeks ago I took Hunter to the vet because she was chewing two of her nails down really, really far.  One of them is really dry, brittle and is peeling. The vet couldn't figure out what the problem was and said that fungal infections in the actual nail itself are really uncommon in dogs but not impossible.  The pads of her feet and the skin on her foot were perfectly fine.  The vet gave me some antiseptic type pads to clean the nails with 4 times a day.  There has been some improvement, not a lot but there is still peeling and she is chewing some, not as much.

This afternoon I was downloading some photos and ran across this one.... I was not home when it was taken and somehow did not notice Hunter's nails.....

Now mind you this was taken a week before the nail issue but I am certain this has to be the cause, and that is NOT doggie friendly nail polish either.

Any suggestions on how to treat Hunter's nails now that I can be 99.9% sure that is nothing fungal related?  My daughter (the kitchen beautician) suggested putting this stuff called Mavala on the fur area to make it taste gross when she goes to chew, I am not convinced.  She said it was pretty funny I had no issue's using it when my younger daughter was still sucking her fingers and I wanted her to stop but I am afraid to use it on Hunter!!

It does not look any worse at all, the nail is not split at all just kind of peeling all the way around and she is chewing two of them shorter than the rest.  They don't look irritated other than the shortness and peeling now....  pretty much the same as when I took her to the vet.  I have not noticed a change with the wipes they had me use 3-4x a day.

What a nice best friend you had! Hotdog finger's or not!  I "had" a best friend when I got divorced to, she decided she liked my ex-husband better than me if you know what I mean LOL They both did me a favor!!!

Aww poor hunter, there is always a price to pay for fashion! Maybe mushers secret in the irritated nails?
Id still cover her paw for awhile so she stops biting it. Only way it will heal and hopefully not get infected.

I am very sensitive to nail polish remover and have to use the non-acetone kind.  Could your daughter have used it and it has irritated Hunter's nails and caused her to chew at them?  When I use it, it makes my nails feel like they have a bruise and it bothers some more than others.

Nothing to add here, I'm the only girl at my house and it you recall - I love nail polish!  I did want to point out that Hunter looks very relaxed and content during her salon photos.  Us girls like to be pampered.  If your daughter and whomever was taking the pictures wants to paint her nails in the future - they do have doggie nail polish that I've seen in the pet stores a much safer choice.  The big Great Dane - Lola, at our dog park showed up last week with pink nails, matched her mom's and her new leash - I'm going to mention this to her as a caution.  I'd either put a cover over the entire foot or is bitter apple safe for topical use?

The bitter apple is a very good idea!!  I am going to do some Googling to see if it would be safe.  Hunter does not like apples or applesauce at all.

Kelsey was taking the pictures (she is 9) and Hunter is an absolute girl and does love to be pampered! She will let the girls dress her, put bows and hats on her.  The latest is they keep putting this temporary hair color - they sell it like Claire's Boutique - and its in a tube like mascara and you put streaks in your hair in bright pink, purple, green, blue, etc. and the girls have taken to putting a rainbow of streaks in Hunter's tail.  I swear it's like Hunter knows they are there because she wags her tail like "Look at me!". LOL

They "claimed" they didn't use any nail polish remover and I do not remember cleaning any cotton pads with remover on them up or having to tell them to put the remover away (gee because why would they have done that themselves!).  Nail polish remover always irritates my nails to, I haven't even had much luck with the non-acetone kind.

I wrapped her paw today with that self sticking rubber like Ace Bandage stuff and she didn't even try to get it off her foot.  I am a little nervous to leave it on over night incase she chews it off her foot......

We have used that type of bandage many times and once they are asleep, they leave it alone. Well ,Murphy does, cuz he sleeps like a log. Hopefully if she wakes and tries to lick, the bandage will discourage it. Funny, but Murphy has a red spot between his toes that he's been Licking since yesterday. I found a mat and cut it out, but it seems once they get an area irritated they seem to keep at it. DH sprayed it with a spray we've been using for skin irritations like this and, just stood with him to tell him "no lick" each time he went for the paw, and he stopped licking and went to sleep. I hope she leaves it alone too.
I have used bitter apple on her hair before too and on Bella's head and ears because Murphy grabs her by the top of her head and drags her around. Never a dull moment with two doodles.
