My 5 month old doodle has developed a cough.  She sounds like she;s trying to get something out of her throat and sometimes vomits a little when she coughs.  She's had all her shots, but could she have contracted kennel cough?

Yes, sounds like a kennel cough to me. They can get it even though they are vaccinated. Happened to Monty as well. I don't remember whether the vet gave us anything for the cough, you might want to call your vet.

She probably has kennel cough.... Enzo is 6 months and has it right now. Vet said to give him a little honey, throughout the day and it has helped! Feel better :)

That's interesting. Humans under 1 year are not supposed to have honey due to botulism spores. Dogs do have more acidic stomachs so that may make a difference.

Does sound like kennel cough which yes they can get even if they have had the shot.  However, double check to make sure your vet gave the shot because at our vet it isn't one that is given unless you specifically ask.

Bordatella vaccine is like flu vaccine; it doesn't completely immunize a dog (or person) against all strains of the virus. They can still get it.

I would call the vet.

Good info on kennel cough (bordatella): http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2102&aid=452

Absolutely! Fudge got kennel cough and had the vaccine. I forget what the vet treated her with, but she was unable to go back to doggie daycare for two weeks. Good luck!!

Interesting as our vets here just automatically schedule it every 6 months and you have to ask to NOT get it if you don't want it. I just assumed it was that way everywhere. Maybe we are in a higher infection area. I do refuse it and have to sign a consent saying so. They don't go to daycare and the one or two days a month they might get to the dog park doesn't seem too risky to me. I am trying to minimize vaccinations to the most necessary ones. So far all is good and Yes, i know they can get it in even one visit to the dog park. And like what has been mentioned, the vaccination doesn't guarentee them not getting it anyway.

wow, every six months.  Here it is yearly.

Yes, every 6. Wonder why some are truly and some 6 mo.

Every six months here too.  Our vet gives the shot, not the nasal.

We were dog sitting a friend's dog and she got it at the park. We gave her Robitussin D  a few times and she was fine in 24 hours. If this does not help call the vet. Some dogs get it badly and have to have antibiotics.

I gave pups clavamox (antibiotic) for kennel cough and it cleared up quickly. The way I understand it, the vaccine is kind of like a flu shot in that it is only temporary and you need to get the dog re-vaccinated if it is going to be around a lot of other dogs--like in a dog class or a kennel.
