hey everyone!! Midas is my 19 week old golden doodle puppy.. The vet told me to feed him 3 times a day a total of 2 1/2 cups divided into the 3 feeding times.. But Midas scarfs down the food so fast I felt that was too little.. I feed him dry food and I have been feeding him a cup 3 times a day.. Sp I'm feeding a 1/2 a cup more then the vet said.. But he STILL inhales the food in seconds like he's never eaten before and he goes looking in the bag for more.. I feel like he still needs more food he is a growing puppy.. He weighs 42 lbs and is to over weight at all... How much and how often do u guys feed??

Chelsea - please join the Puppy Madness Group here on DK - a great place to talk to and share with lots of others who have puppies under the age of two.  There is no easy answer to your question.  It depends on what type of food you are feeding, the recommended amount, etc.  There is also the Food Group where you can learn about the best brands of food to be feeding.  Good luck with your growing puppy!

Chelsea, Have you checked out all the wonderful groups we have here on DK?  We have almost everything you could think of.....Food Group, Photography, Puppy Group, and even a Poop Group :) LOL If you use the search engine you can find lots of answers there and past discussions on lots of the topics you have posted.  Your puppy is adorable and I love his name.

Thanks guys ok I will check those groups!!! :)

I just had this conversation with my Mom two days ago because she said her Vet said to feed her dog X number of cups of dog food per day.  That makes me crazy because how can the Vet know how much food to feed when she doesn't even know what my Mom is feeding.  Trying to explain to my Mom you need to look at the bag and determine how much.  The Vet cannot know that.  The Vet's don't know squat about food.  Chelsea ... one thing you might need to do is to feed twice a day vs. three times.  That way he will get a little more each time.  But don't overfeed as it is hard to get that weight off once they put on too much.

We fed 3 cups a day broken down into 3 feedings when Remi was a puppy. As an adult he gets 1 1/2 twice a day.

Most dog food bags have suggestions on how much to feed based on age and weight of the dog. If you no longer have the food bag, you can find the info on line. That's where I started. When Buddy was 19 weeks he was eating about 3 cups of Blue Buffalo puppy a day. It was divided into 4 meals. I always saved a bit for a snack before bedtime because he would throw yellow bile if his tummy was empty too long. I also learned that puppies will get soft poo or pudding poo if they eat too much.
