Went on a great 3 mile walk/run with my Cubby today and was pulling the cockleburrs out of his coat afterwards. Now, I have done this so many times, he always seems to be covered in them. But he had a group of them burrowed into his leg and I thought I could snip it out quick. I cut him! It was horrible, he acted like he didn't even feel it. Just sat there chewing his bone while I tried to stop the bleeding. When I realized how deep it was- right where the paw bends, I rushed him to the hospital - four staples and a bandage cast later he is happily sleeping in his kennel and I am feeling ROTTEN! He was such a great doodle, didn't flinch, didn't bark or nip, just sat there and acted like he deserved all the attention from the vet and nurses- which of course he did!

OMD! I keep telling myself I need to buy blunt nosed scissors! Thank you for the incentive to do it now! Your boy is such a patient and calm doodle. What a love. I'm sorry you are feeling so guilty. Here you were trying to lovingly care for him and he got hurt. Blessings to both of you!
poor guy :( how long does he need to be confined? it sure sounds like he was unaffected by it all...
don't beat yourself up...it was just an accident :)
Thank you! He needs to be kenneled for at least througout the night except for potty breaks. It's ok, at least he had just finished his 3 mile walk so I know he has been exercised. I brought him out of the kennel for a little while but even on the leash next to me he is restless. The main issue is that it is right on the bendy part of the paw, so unless we an keep it really still and make sure it does not re open we might have to go bak in and suture the vessels closed instead of just staples. Keeping my fingers crossed it clots enough during the night to not have that happen.
Glad he was not upset---I did this to my dog once on her paw pad and the same thing--she didn't care and i felt awful!
Poor Cubby and poor you, it sounds like you feel worse than Cubby. Accidents happen, blunt nose scissors and a comb between his skin and where you are cutting is the way to go.
Scary!!! I'm glad he's okay!
Accidents happen and now Cubby is fine. I hope he recovers soon.
What a good boy! That's a cute bandage he has on his leg :)
Poor Cubby and Poor you. I clipped Sophie's nail a little too short once. She didn't even flinch but it bled for quite some time and I felt horrible. It was an accident - give him lots of TLC and he will be good as new soon.
Thanks guys! He is doing great! Had it out of the kennel for a 20 min potty break and some love and now he is resting again. Thank you again for all the encouraging words - he is acting like a Rockstar and I'm consoling myself with a bowl of ice cream.
I've done this myself. I felt horrible also. He did heal just fine. Take this as lessons learned. That is the best you can do. Maybe we all will learn something from your story. I know, when it happened to me, I made sure I never would do it again. I haven't--knocking on wood.
Your story sounds so familiar. My dog acted like nothing happened. He let out a little growl, but he always does. The cut was deep and I was shocked. If that was a human ... well can you imagine? I did it a few times the same day before I realized. I got a new pair of scissors!!! Get Well Soon
ahhh Cubby I am sorry this happened but it sounds like you are a real trooper. Please tell your owner/mommy not to beat herself up and just to give you lots of loving.
Let us know how Cubby is doing! Such a sweet looking doodle boy:)
