I am wondering how many people have actually tasted their dog's food?

I have never tasted Alma's food.  We free feed her.  I have never had a dog that does not eat the instant the food is put down.  But Alma eats when she wants to - sometimes hours after I have put her food down. We've tried many different brands with the same results.  She is at a healthy weight according to our vet and has been really healthy.  So, I'm really just curious...

Have you ever tried dog food?

ginger could care less whether she eats or not!  She loves treats, but has never been an eager eater.

Dogs have only about one-sixth the number of taste buds that humans have. Their sense of taste is relatively poor, and it's thought that they derive most of their information about food from their sense of smell. That's why the lower quality dog food companies spray the food with rancid fat, to make it more appealing to dogs.

Actually humans derive much of their sense of taste from smell too. Losing the sense of smell is not that uncommon. I know 2 people who suffered this and complain about not tasting much at all.

Yep - we only have 5 different types of taste buds, but about 6000 types of smell receptors.  Our sense of taste is only good for distinguishing categories of foods (salty, sweet etc.) but the smell is where the details of our tasting comes from.

Yup, I remember when my mom used to give me fish oil when I was a kid. The only way I could put it in my mouth was to squeeze my nose so that I don't taste the fish oil on my tongue.

That is very interesting! And good to know. I guess by putting something on top of it, it appeals to her sense of smell. That will make it a lot easier, trying to find something to make it smell good.

That's very interesting.  Hmmm, sounds like dog food companies should market this idea?  They could start labeling the bag with the smell content!  lol

Regretfully, yes! I once reached into the refrig to grab a Spudder Butter Cookie and got a Liver Treat instead.
Awful :/@
@ F., F.J. lost his sense of smell years ago after a broken nose and finds food not all that impressive. Maybe I should break my nose

Yeah, me too!

Ha.

Joanne, don't bother breaking your nose, I broke mine but I can still smell just fine. Although it is true that your nose makes a crunching noise when you break it.
