Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi everyone, we're new here.  Lily is 12 weeks and has been with us about a month now.  I was wondering if you had any suggestions for chew toys/bones?  She has zero interest in any of the nylabones or similar type plastic bones (we have one shaped like a "T" too).  She also has zero interest in her Kong.  My Mom bought her a package of Purina Busy Bone Rollhides and she LOVED those, but I'm guessing they aren't the best thing in the world for her so I haven't bought any more.  I've heard negative things about regular rawhides, especially for puppies, so we haven't even gone there.  But I'm struggling to find something that will entice her.  We have a rope toy, she'll play with it for a few minutes and then gets bored.  Same with her stuffed toys. Suggestions?

Have you tried bully sticks?  I get the odor free ones for Boone and he loves them.  The regular ones last a long time but he eats the spiral ones in a day.  I heard they are supposed to be better than rawhide.

My puppy loves bully sticks. Takes him forever to chew and they aren't hard to digest. Only downfall is their odor unless you get the odor free ones. They are amazing! As far as toys my dog loves water bottles lol he loves the sound and the fact that he can crunch them. Cheap toy! Also they have stuffing free liners for the water bottle so it looks like a stuffed animal

Oh yeah, I forgot about this - we were doing the empty water bottles for Annie and she would play with it for hours, but it gets really loud at our house because we have no carpeting, only area rugs.  She will push and chase a water bottle around without getting bored.

The other thing she really loves, is this cat toy I got from petco, its like a 3 foot long stick with a bundle of feathers on the end.  I just tease her with it, and she rarely is able to 'catch' it.  She plays with that thing until I put it away - I have had her playing with that for 45 minutes straight before, no joke.  The only reason I thought to get this was because we had Annie with us at petco, and were walking around doing leash familiarization.  We walked through the cat section and I picked one of these up and flicked it around and she went bonkers in the store...so I bought it.

We used bully sticks.  They are perfect babysitters plus a good chew choice.   Not everyone will agree with the use of bully sticks but it is an exercise in finding what works for your puppy and will do no harm but rather be of benefit.  Also, we found it took a bit for Hurley to get interested in any of his toys (other than the bully sticks). The interest we short just like a small child's.  Won't be long and you will be wondering why it takes such a short time for Lily to tear up a toy.

I agree wholeheartedly with the bully stick recommendations.  When Maizey was that small she had no interest in the kong (unless there was peanut butter involved) or nylabones or rope toys.  It definitely took her a while to get into her soft toys - now as a 10.5 month old she can't have them unsupervised or they quickly lose their ears and appendages.  At 12 weeks she started to get into bully sticks and I fondly remember when it would take her days to go through one... Now she can eat one in a few hours.  Anyways, my trainer at the time said their jaws aren't very strong and it's hard for them to chew the big sticks so they get turned off easily. She said to get the smaller thinner ones/curly ones. And they're cheaper too!  Bully sticks became my best friend when Maizey started to get really mouth-y.

Maizey loved the Sam's Yams (and still does, she just eats them faster) at that age - they took her a good long while to eat.  You can get them at specialty pet stores.  I also got her a Himalayan cheese stick - that lasted for several months when she was small and she would just gnaw on it happily. I also tried antlers - but she didn't get into those until probably 6-7 months (once her big girl teeth started coming in).  Finally - the water bottle thing is a great idea.  Maizey loved that too, just be careful because it can break apart (unless it's in one of those liners).

Have fun and enjoy this time - they grow so incredibly fast!!

Antlers or bully sticks
Sam is 6 months old and he loves both the bully sticks and antlers. He prefers the split antlers. I recently tried the Himalayan dog chew and he seems to like it, just not love it! I also I have this rubber ring that I stuff peanut butter/ yogurt/ apples/blueberries into then freeze it. He LOVES when I give him one of these, especially while he was teething!

Thanks for the recommendations.  I have never heard of bully sticks, I will try those.  Where do you find them?  How often do you give them one?  And thanks for the water bottle tip, that sounds like something she would love!

http://www.bestbullysticks.com/  I buy mine online because I get the odor-free ones.  Petco has the regular ones.  I have asked them to supply the odor-free ones but in the meantime I will continue to order online.  I give a new one when the old one gets really short and I worry he will choke on it.  The spiral ones just disappear in a day.  haha   I think he eats it fairly quickly.  But the regular ones seem to last a week or two.  Good luck.  I don't think you'll be disappointed in these.

Oh and don't even ask what they are lol

I get the braided ones for Daphne. They seem to last longer.
