Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Well...guess I messed that up...
Here are my questions. Meg is 6 months old in this picture and standing next to a full grown Lab. Her paws are bigger than his and while I know that is probably a myth I am wondering if I can expect her to get much larger?
Second question, I am wondering if she will ever develop more of a doodle coat? When she is freshly groomed she fluffs out a bit more, is developing wiry hair along her haunches and legs, her tail is starting to feather out and her beard has developed a bit more in the month we have had her.
Any ideas what we might expect in the end...the suspense drives me nuts but I am thinking I may just have to wait to see. I love her to pieces but curiosity has me wondering.
There is a rule of thumb that you double the weight at 4 months and that will be within 5 pounds (+ or -) of the adult weight--I have found that my dogs were about 3/4 of their final weight at 7 months--yes, she will get bigger but not too much taller--she will mostly gain weight as she fills out.
Now,as for that coat, she will not have a curly "doodle-y" coat but probably will get a lot more feathering and will have a shaggier look.Just let it keep growing and see what happens! Then you can decide what length you like--does she shed a lot? If not too much, then the coat should grow in longer.
I am just curious about what the breeder told you--or do I remember that Meg was a rescue? My point is that if someone promised you a curly doodle-y coat, they were not being honest!
Meg is a rescue and I was not promised anything. I have been in contact with the breeder since somehow in her previous homes her papers came forward with her. I am planning to send the breeder a picture as well.
I don't need a curly look so much as I am hoping she gets that scruffy Disney type look. That is my hope but honestly if she doesn't change a bit she already snagged our hearts.
Does she shed? I can not begin to tell you what an understatement that would be! Constant brushing, vacuuming and wiping...I guess she just likes letting us know where all she has been. The birds will be very happy when they return this spring.
Ginny - Stuart sheds very badly and his coat (which we just cut off this past month) grew to be VERY long - 12 inches in places - so I don't thing the shedding has anything to do with the hair length.
The same with JD. Shedding has nothing to do with hair length. The gene for long-hair is separate from any other genes, so a dog can be a heavy shedder and still have a very long coat. It's not as if the hair falls out before it can get long. Think about collies.
She's going to keep getting bigger in terms of height and overall dimensions(bone growth) for at least another 2 or 3 months. After that, she will still be putting on muscle mass, even if she stops growing, so her weight will continue to go up until she is at least a year old. She's definitely going to be bigger than the average Lab, although she may not be as heavy. JD is considerably taller and larger overall than the purebred Labs in the neighborhood, but some of them weigh as much as he does, and even more. Doodles usually have a lighter skeletal frame than purebred labs, even though they can be much taller.
I don't know what Meg weighs now, but she's going to be a BIG dog, lol.
Hard to say about her coat. As Ginny mentioned, she's not going to have the typical doodley look. Her coat will get thicker and she may "doodle" out a little more, especially around the face and legs. Yes, you are going to have to wait and see...kind of like with human kids. One of the fun parts of adopting a rescue puppy!
I don't think Meg will be QUITE as scruffy as Stanlee but I think this is about the age (Meg’s age) when his coat really started filling out. Seems Meg is similar in size to Stanlee so she will probably be more leggy and tall then stout like some doodles. Stanlee is now about 65 pounds (+/-) but very tall so I think Meg will be a bit taller than the lab but maybe not as heavy. Stanlee is a little over 8½ months now and I STILL can't wait to see what he will look like when he's all grown up.
Marnie, I would love for Meg to look similar to Stanlee, he is such a cutie.
Meg has the same silky ears and wavy back
I think that however she turns out, Meg is just adorable--such pretty, soulful eyes! Please post more pictures of her!
I do think that she will get more whiskery, though--Sadie started to get her doodle-y look around four or five months.
Becka, don't encourage me...I take as many pictures of her as I ever did of my human kids.
