Hi all.  I know I am a nervous mom, but Paz is almost 3 and the vet says he needs a professional cleaning which requires anesthesia.  I really am diligent about brushing his teeth, but he squirms so much that it is really difficult. I know it is important to keep his teeth and gums in good shape, am just nervous about the general anesthesia.  Has anyone had experience with getting their doodles teeth cleaned at the vet?

Darwin gets hard chews, we do teeth brushing, and he still had really bad tartar. He's only 3! I kind of wonder if it's just genetics with him. The vet advised that we get a dental cleaning done last year because of the amount of tartar he had, so we had it done despite being worried. It went totally fine! It took a few hours, he was a groggy for a bit and then he was back to normal. His teeth were sparkly white. :-) I'd say if there is enough tartar that it could be causing gum disease or other health issues then you should go ahead and do it.

Thank you.  I'm going to schedule it after the holidays.  Your right...if he develops signiicant gum problems that could be more dangerous than the cleaning.

Jackdoodle had his teeth cleaned under general anesthetic in 2011. Everything went fine and his teeth looked great. He was not even groggy afterwards, his mouth was jusy a little swollen for a few hours.

Both Roo and Tigger had their teeth cleaned about a month ago.  I am a sissy too and worried.  But as it turns our they are only lightly anaesthetized and they were absolutely fine afterward, even Roo who has Addison's disease.  That is how Tigger's broken tooth was found..    If I had not had their teeth cleaned, before long Tigger's broken tooth would have abscessed and that would have been worse.

wow i feel much better and will definitely schedule this after the holidays.

I definitely think it is partly due to genetics. We had a Cavalier that had terribly tartar. Antlers have helped our doodles so much, but maybe they just aren't prone to tartar.

Ned broke a tooth and they put him under to pull it and cleaned his teeth at the same time.  He was fine.

I've had it done on both my dogs and things went fine.  They were both a little groggy but slept it off at home for a couple of hours and were back to normal before the end of the evening.  I brush their teeth every night and still can't seem to win the war against the tarter.

Cole' (not a doodle) was 13+ when his eye got infected. I took him to the local vet who we had just started going to. In examining him she looked in his mouth and said that the teeth were so badly infected that the infection had spread to the eye. Cole's previous vet always required that Cole' be muzzled and never looked in his mouth. Just my experience.  Teeth cleaning is necessary for the overall health.
