I think they don't know yet. But there were other things with melamine in them that killed dogs.
Donna, they don't know. That's why they are still on the shelves, there is no proof that the treats are causing the problem. But you really shouldn't buy anything edible for your dogs that is made in China or that is made with ingredients imported from China. It's not always easy to tell. An Amercian address for the company doesn;t mean that the product is made there, or that it's made with American ingredients. This is a very complicated issue which has been discussed extensively; there are even book about it. In 2007, there were massive recalls of pet foods that used tainted ingredients from China and killed or permanently sickened thusands of dogs and cats.
Basically, you should not buy anything edible for your pets that is sold in the Grocery store, Target, Walmart, Kmart, Costco, Sams Club, Walgreen's, etc. We have lists of recommended brands in the Food group. You want to stay away from brands manufactured by huge major multinational corporations, which includes many of the common brands like Iams, Nutro, Science Diet, and junk like Beneful or Pedigree. All this and much much more in The Food group.
Yes, Purina would be one to avoid. Please do join the Food Group and do some reading.
Thanks for posting.
I'm so proud of you for discovering this and posting it. The Food Group has changed our doodles lives. Karen has educated us so much in how best to serve the needs of our dogs. You will be so glad when you have done just a little research in The Food Group and discover what to feed those precious pets of yours. Obviously there are lots of options but there are good choices and poor choices. Hope you find what you need for your dood.
If your dogs are as addicted to jerky as mine, we call it puppy crack - there are healthy options out there. One that we have found is Colorado Naturals - chickens raised in the U.S., organic but very expensive! Of course we only give this in limited portions.
Jane, that's one of the Kasel Industries products that has had numerous recalls for salmonella. It is made in the U.S. but is not safe! We have lots of info about this in the recall section of the Food Group.
