After giving Monty a bath sometime in December, I've noticed a little wart on one of his toes. It was sitting on the top of his very left toe on his front right leg. I called the vet and she told me to keep an eye on it. Since then the wart grew and Monty noticed it as well and started to lick on it so I had to put a sock on his foot every time he was just laying around the house. So between the holidays I took him to the vet and asked for an opinion. The vet said she can easily remove it, but it is not really necessary. She gave me a prescription strength bitter orange to put on the wart so that Monty does not lick it. Well, it did not quite work since then he started licking his whole foot to get rid of the taste. So I stopped using the gel and for a while Monty forgot about the wart. Starting yesterday, he again seems bugged by the wart and slept with a sock on last night. The wart is about pea size by now. He is at a daycare today, so he won't have time to be bored and lick.

Question for you: does anyone have an experience with a dog wart removal? Our vet said it's pretty simple, not even a full anesthesia is necessary. Should I just ask the vet the schedule the removal? The daycare is at our vet's building, so I will stop by to talk to her when I go pick up the boys later today.

Thank you!

Doris recently had experience with this (Knox had a wart removed from above his lip)... Hopefully she will see your post and comment or you could message her.

Oh, I did not know. I will wait to see if she responds.

Not a wart, but JD had a funny little growth right where his tail joins his back; the vet thought that it should be biopsied just to be on the safe side, because it was impossible to know what it was by looking at it. (It turned out to be some kind of mole.) The vet removed it with just local anesthetic, it took about 30 minutes total and JD had no side effects whatsoever. If the wart is getting larger and/or bothering Monty, I would go ahead and have it removed. It may be challenging to get him to leave the spot alone afterwards while it's healing, though. JD couldn't reach his. :-)

Luna had an odd wart (papillomavirus growth) on the inside of her ear flap - it eventually went away on its own without being removed.  Thankfully though it was in a place she couldn't lick.

The vet gave us some antiseptic solution (surgical disinfectant) to put onto the wart to keep it from getting infected - that seemed to help "soften" it a little and it eventually fell off.

Two of our dogs had papillmavirus growths in their mouth, one had it on the tongue, the other on the lip.  The one on the tongue was right on the tip and very visible, after it got to a certain size, we just had the vet remove it....didn't need any anesthesia.  It came off easily.  The other on the lip eventually just fell off.  Typically they will just fall off on their own - neither of ours seemed to be bothered by the growth, but we had the one removed just due to the location - didn't want her to accidently bite it.

Wow, they grow on strange places. What worries me about Monty's wart, that even if he did not lick it, it''s on such a spot that he can easily scrape when running, or even the groomer might accidentally nick it. Thanks. I will talk to the vet in the afternoon about the removal. It would be nice if it fell off on its own, but I'm afraid that Monty will bug it too much and I don't want it to get infected.

They're USUALLY either on feet or in the mouth.  The vet took lots of pictures of Luna's and shared them with other vets because he had never seen one growing on an ear.

Hopefully Monty's can be removed easily!

Well, we just had a subcutaneous cyst removed from Groucho.  I wanted to give him a bath and haircut and the cyst was still draining, so I didn't want to do either.  Took him to the vet and said I did not want anesthesia because he has reacted to it before.  She removed the cyst with a local and laser.  Had to shave off some hair and he is on antibiotics for a week, but seems fine.  You might ask about laser removal.

I have experience with this.  Our lab mix Simon had one on his snout.  The vet told us that it was really more of a cosmetic thing regarding removal.  It grew some and we decided to have it removed.  It was a simple thing.  I am glad that we did.  He also had one on his side that we didn't remove, but periodically it did get nicked when he was groomed.

Thanks, friends. The removal is scheduled for Monday. Hopefully it goes well and the wound heals fast without Monty bugging it. I'll keep you posted.
